Arrrgh....Influence?!?

Sorry for the lame post but I simply cannot find any referene to influence other than certain action cards that generally say something like "you influence the target". I've used both the official and unofficial indexes but to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

I would generally say that "you influence the target" means that they make the target more positively disposed towards what the PC is trying to do.
When haggling I usually let it mean that you get a better price, when trying to get someone to confess to something you make headway towards that goal. If you are using a progress tracker to track how it's going in a social situations the "you influence the target" line means that the tracker moves one (or more) steps in the right direction. It could also mean one (or more) fortune dice on the PC's next roll, as the target is more positive to what the PC is saying.

I can't rememember that a specific reference to this line exists, and I believe that it's because it's too dependant on the circumstances.

In a "social encounter" with a tracker, for example you're trying to convince the court that you were in possession of warpstone solely because you took it from rat-men (ridiculous story), and need to advance 4 spaces before the automatically advances each round prosecution case reaches end of track, "influence" could mean advance one space.

In more "story mode" encounters not involving trackers etc. (the win is not important enough to invest multiple rolls of on-screen time in it), it could mean "success" right there at convincing someone to do something, like bartender to forget you we there that night.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that "Influence" isn't described or even mentioned in the rules, at all?! Wow, that's......well, I was 100 % sure I read about it or some such before. WFRP3 -1, really....

The "rules" for influencing a target are found on Page 65 of the Player's Guide in the "Action Card Language" dialog box (beginning of the Actions and Manoeuvres chapter if you're using the core set). The described effects for influencing a target are fairly broad, to give both players and GMs a large degree of latitude when using such action cards. In part, it reads:

In essence, "influence" is a shorthand for "cause the target to behave in the desired fashion, as determined by your GM" which may include advancing a progress token or other effects.

It goes on to give an example of using Steely Gaze to convince a guard to let you pass. If you succeed at the roll, the guard lets you in, or you would make progress toward your goal in a more formal social encounter (i.e. a progress tracker was being used to see if you can get past the guard).

It's pretty fast and loose, but I hope that helps a little.
