how would you handle?

By boggle2, in WFRP Rules Questions

a balloon crashing into the woods with players on board.

how would you handle this?

Do you want to have death on the line, or just rough them up?

Here's an idea if you want to rough them up pretty hard:

Have them make a hard (3d) or daunting (4d) Resilience roll. Each success subtracts 2 from the 10 wounds they are going to take from the crash. Each chaos star gives out an additional critical wound. Each bane is a point of fatigue.

Instead of wounds, you could do something similar with Environmental Damage dice.

Hi,

Before the Res check maybe give the option for the players to make a Hard(3d) Athletics/Coordination check to leap off onto a nearby branch. Success determines they have landed in a tree, hanging on, and must now climb safely down. Any banes cause fatigue, a chaos star dishes out a wound. Afailure leads to the aforementioned Res check, carrying over any stars as extra misfortune dice? I just like the idea of agile characters having some kind of chance to swashbuckle their way to a few scratches..

Boggle, if this is part of a scenario involving, say, a chase scene, forest ambush or similar, you could use a progress tracker and move it in favour of the bad guys for any star rolled by any PC. Ie, said ballon has been shot down by a greenskin force after the PCs for one reason or another. The players have some bad luck on the crash, stack some stars up and find half a dozen gobbo spider riders bearing down on them next turn, half the party clinging to branches and the other half lying winded amongst the wicker wreckage on the forest floor...

True, that's another good way of handling it.

... but I would either make them do the Resilience check or the Environmental Damage dice. I wouldn't roll for both.

Yeah. That might seem a bit unnecessary. But, otoh, having everyone take the same ED dice regardless of physique/skill might not be popular.

Istm, and I haven't used this before but I might now, you could just add your, say, Resilience pool to the ED pool to potentially reduce the effects. I like that.

Apply toughness. It's not used enough. If you need MOAR DAMAGE, do 13-Toughness-Successes = taken wounds. (or 14 or 15). Personally i'd still do 10-Tou-Successes but do banes->wounds, Chaos->criticals. I mean this *IS* a crash landing. In warhammer.

Also. Coordination should be an option. Or anything cool people think up.
