Are the old ccg sets worth buying?

Hey, I was just wondering if the old ccg sets would be worth picking up and if they work with the lcg format. I am only a casual player so tournment rules don't really bother me. I just wanted to know if buying any of the old boosters would be worth it? Do the old cards and new cards work well together? Is there any major rule difference? Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

My local playgroup had a he=ll of a time playing the old stuff so it is hard to say don't buy it but ultimatley it comes down to if you want to play tourneys or not. If you do it might not be worth picking up, if not a hell of a time was had by all in our playgroup. By the way I sam very drunk take everything I say with a grain of salt.

The CCG stuff is obviously not legal in LCG tournaments (except a handful of cards that are direct reprints). As for casual games, it really depends. If everyone in the group plays CCG cards, they can be a fun addition. But if nobody else plays CCG cards, you might want to avoid them, as there is a noticable power difference between LCG and CCG (with CCG being more powerful on average). There's some trait synergy between LCG and CCG cards, but none of the new LCG mechanics are supported by CCG cards (e.g. Seasons, Shadows).

Just made a Night's Watch deck combining cards from as far back as Westeros to as recent as The Winds of Winter (or A Sword in the Darkness, whatever was more recent). So far from what I've seen with the new stuff, there is nothing as powerful as Put to the Sword/Torch (though Die by the Sword is similar to the first), no old-style Tears of Lys, and no plots that are as universally useful as Summons and Building Orders. Though seeing that Salladhor Saan is still around is pretty badass. The old game had some pretty brutal stuff happening, lol.

Speaking of brutal old game, does anyone else remember the Wildlings Attack! promotional tournament, with the uber-broken Wildling deck that players had to defeat to win? That was rad.

Oh Yeah, definitely remember the wildling promo deck (still have it!).

I would say - yes, they are worth buying/work fine with the LCG cards. Escpecially the last couple of sets (The Iron Throne block was a favorite of mine), ITE and Five Kings sets wouldn't alter the play feel a lot from what you have now in my opinion.

Other blocks would have a different feel, and definitely some cards where the power alignment would feel out of place. For instance, I would suggest avoiding the Winter Edition blocks (they have a lot of wildling and Night's watch characters if you like those, but introduced the doomed mechanic - which only lasted that set, and was probably the biggest failure/mistake FFG came up with).

As stated, the initial block Westeros, also has a different feel (negative was a lot more marshalling effects - but aside from those, I thought the feel of the game was actually better - a lot more events focused on bad things happening if you lost a challenge).

I would suggest starting with the ITE block: Irone Throne Edition, House of Thorns (House Tyrell & House Bolton characters), and House of Talons (Arryn characters)

Then if you like it, maybe go back to the Westeros block (Westeros (only Stark, lannister and Baratheon were houses), Sea of Storms (introduced greyjoy) and Flight of Dragons (introduced Targaryen).

This block will give you a completely different feel.

Depending on what you like better, then go with Five Kings (if you like ITE/LCG feel/similar more similar cards) or if you liked westeros go with Valryian block, then Ice & Fire, and Winter Edition last. Some people might suggest Valyrian before Westeros - but if you want something different I'd try Westeros (definitely a different feel to game with Put to the Sword/Torch, Tears of Lys, and Contested Claim). Note that Westeros won't have separate Martell cards - they were not introduced until the Ice & Fire block

personally... all these gentlemen given you advice are hardcore O.G. thug riders! these guys are so knowledgeable of everything it's inspiring :) they've played CCG before, have you? my boy got me into this world and he's also one of the O.G. along with a handful of other guys! you know how many times they've brought out their CCG stuff... once and only 'cause i begged to see what kind of cards they had back when dinosaurs walked! there was this knarly Red Viper; specialized challenges! IT'S CRAZY... don't go backwards bro! there is so much LCG stuff to buy (atleast three copies of the chap. packs pre brotherhood cycle and if you're ballin' two more core sets ;) ) i started playing about a year an a half ago and i would recommend only buying LCG formatted cards released after the clash of arms cycle (i believe) anyway... i don't know how hardcore you are or how long you've been playing, but the CCG stuff belongs in a museum and should only be played with dudes at tournaments that are vying for the "drunker than Robert B." award! buy LCG!!!
