Help please! (how to calculate range attack exactly ?

By Cyberbob666, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello,

I need help to calculate range attack, i check on FAQ and the guide and found nothing.

Exemple:

You have the 6 X 6 tile

I put number on every space on this tile for my exemple.

row1: 1-2-3-4-5-6

row2: 7-8-9-10-11-12

row3: 13-14-15-16-17-18

row4:19-20-21-22-23-24

row5:25-26-27-28-29-30

row6:31-32-33-34-35-36

You are on space 1 and you want to shoot with a bow a beastman on space#34 (line of sight is ok in this case), if you look, it dosen't make a perfect diagonnally range,

2 questions:

- How much i need of range point to hit the beastman?

- Can you explain me on with space of the tile exactly the arrow passtrough?

Thank you !!

Range is always counted space by space - the fact that it is not diagonal doesn´t matter, as long as LoS is okay.

In your example, the necessary range is 5. Simply look for the shortest path when counting spaces.

Line of Sight is calculated in a straight line, as such it's basically impossible to make a ranged or magic attack around a corner (barring skills that allow it anyway) however, which exact spaces the attack passes through rarely matter as long as you can, in fact, draw line of sight as a straight line. So, having ensured there are no blocking obstacles between you and your target, just count the shortest path (including the target space but not your hero's space) and that's the range. If you need to "nudge" over a column or two along the way because it's not a perfect diagonal, that's cool. As long as it's the shortest possible path.

Can you source that bit for me? We thought it was that way too, but recently a "new" player in our group told us that the rulebook states that you count from the attacking square and to the targetting square, which to me, means "count the heroes own square as well".

I've looked at the faqs but haven't found anything stating something to the contrary, but i'm all ears.

See the Counting Range Example diagram on pg. 11 in the basic rules - it´s 100% clear.

Duh! This is what happens when you need to learn Descent, WoD and RTL in a single setting, and only have the online rulebook copies available.

I'll make sure we play it right in the future.

Thanks for the reference

Based on the stories of similar-minded game sessions I've heard around here, this is probably just the tip of the iceberg if you're playing RtL without having learned basic Descent beforehand. Be prepared for the OL to win. A lot.

Nah, that mistake we already did once. One of the players insisting that we kill everything in the first dungeon... On the second dungeon she also insisted that we kill a Silver Master demon with +18 wounds and +1 armor...

This is the second run, which was done after reading up on "the art of the blitz". Current standing is 32 to 20 in the heroes favour. Hero selection could have been better, but we are managing. OL is beastman lord doing brother against brother. He currently has Riverwatch under siege (with 2 markers) and a second farrow brother heading to Vynelvale. I'm not sure if we should try to break his siege or just accept that we aren't strong enough to deal with him and let Riverwatch burn. It's not like riverwatch has much to offer us in terms of skill selection.

Also not sure which path we should take for upgrading our heroes, should we focus on getting secret training, a second skill or just more dice in the pool?
