AGoT Android App

By trumpets, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi guys, long time no read :)

Anyhow, I've gotten pretty serious in whipping up an AGoT app for Android powered mobile devices and I would like your input on the features everyone likes it to offer!

I remember this post by Twn2dn from a while back:

"I have an Android phone, and I think the things I would find most useful (incredibly useful in some situations, actually) are:

1. A quick search/look-up for FAQs/rulings. Basically, a search engine that searches FFG's rules documents and the FFG forums (for "unofficial rulings"). I would find this *very* useful, as it often takes more than 5 minutes to track down an obscure ruling. (As part of this, I think including a chart for the timing would be very useful, so that people don't have to scroll through tons of pages of FAQ just to get to the timing section.)
2. A non-web based card lookup. I like Darkbane's website, but when my phone reception is poor, looking up cards can move slowly, I think in part because it loads the images. Also, I spend a lot of time riding subways where there is no reception. Having an AGOT app that I could use to build decks would be pretty neat in that situation.
3. A deckbuilder that is intended/optimized for mobile devices. The existing deck builders cause me to either zoom way out (to the point that touching the right links on the screen is tricky) or scroll back and forth across the page to use the full functionality. Part of the problem, I think, is having pictures' images show up on the mobile device. The photos are cool but just take up too much screen space. I have noticed more critical issues with using a mobile device as well...at times it's tricky to scroll through a widget-based scroll online. The touch screen wants to move the whole page around, when all I want to do is scroll through a widget-based list on the page.

None of these are major issues, but I would definitely get use out of a mobile app. Honestly, we're talking more about improving convenience vs. adding functionality though, so I'm not sure it'd be worth hundreds of hours of code writing just to save a few minutes here and there."

Most of the stuff on the list is doable, with few minor technical quirks that I will figure out.

So, let the comments begin :)

p.s. I will need to contact Darksbane on using his db of cards and card images ;)

WolfgangSenff actually just contacted me about this very thing a few days ago. Get with him as perhaps you two can work on the same app. Send me a PM on Cardgamedb and I can discuss any of the technical details with you.

Also, I'm going to throw out there that mobile tournament software would be amazing. I would love if it did joust and melee pairings and kept track of points for me. That would be such a huge boon!

No problem, we could even go next level and have a single mobile device host the tournament while the other report results to it and get instant notifications when a new round starts with seating and partner instructions :)

I would just need some official documents on the tournament structure and how pairings are done. Are these publicly available?

@Darksbane, pm sent!

Oh my goodness that sounds amazing. I think I might need to change my shorts.

Hilarious, Trumpets. I had the exact same idea, and am starting to work on said app already. We can combine forces and make it killer - do you have source control setup anywhere? Otherwise, I'll figure something out and we can both work on it. :) Hit me up at kyle dot szklenski at gmail dot com.

Sign my phone up to be victim for testing for this amazing idea.

Just wanted to say that this is a pretty awesome idea. I'd like to throw my support behind the tourney software part. I'd like to be able to access a tourney database that would show results to tournies. Kinda like you could set up a tourney on there and add players to it and then report wins and losses. Then if we could add in an elo system with rankings and what not.

And can it be done also for iphone? sonrojado.gif

Thanks.

I as waiting for the "what about iphone" comment.

I'm the only one having neither an android system nor an iphone? :-) I feel old ;-) I go playing with my comodore16 ;-)

I was also pretty far out of the loop (and feeling old about it), but decided that since I've done some SW development for mobile devices, I really should get some first-hand experience on the buggers... And so far, I've been really happy with my droid. *nudge*

...which leads me to my original point, which was to also volunteer for QA:ing this beauty! :)

Oh, and a big thumbs-up for both the idea of a tournament management software (joust pairings, scoreboard, SoS calculation etc) and rule/FAQ -lookup for cards, since I think these would be really nice tools. And the offline card-search as well.

Nah, I don't have a smart phone either. Old school for the win! ;)

I don't have an android phone either. But then again I am posting this using the Xoom gran_risa.gif So i can test tablet compatability. Just make sure it can stretch rather than stay locked in a small phone size.

I have an android, and I'd be very interested in testing this. My guess is, I could get some quality testing time in during my 2+ hours of riding the subway everyday.

I don't post here often, but I"d *love* to help beta test this thing on my Droid X

I´m not interested in any "war" involving diferent phones, only in having this AGoT stuff in my telephone... lengua.gif
