Grabbing something from an enemy.

Let's say that a player wants to grab something which a monster holds tightly. What kind of test is more sensible ,in your opinion, to be used by the player in this situation so he can grab the item?

I'd just use an opposed check like Agility vs. Strength, or just Strength vs. Strength. You could add Fortune and Misfortune based on size of the object, if it's being held by two hands, size difference between creatures, etc.

I'd also be inclined to make it an Action instead of just an Maneuver.

In my opinion, this would be a perfect time to use the Perform a Stunt action card.

Perhaps 1 success = you disarm the target, with 3 success = you disarm the target and hit for -2 damage (DR based on the weapon you grabbed).

You could have 2 boons = if you're armed, base the damage off the weapon you're wielding. Other boon options could be: 1 success = if you have a free hand, you grab the target's weapon (as opposed to just knocking the weapon away). Or, you could have 2 boons = the target gains the Exposed condition for 2 rounds. And obviously, the target can't parry until they ready another weapon (with a manoeuvre).

The Perform a Stunt card doesn't have a comet line, but if you're feeling generous you could have a comet = Suffer 1 fatigue and make a basic Melee Strike against the target at -2 damage. That might be overdoing it a little, but sometimes it's fun to let the players shine. Maybe only include this option if you make the action an opposed check?

As for a test, you could base it off the Acrobatic Strike card (which has disarming an opponent as one of its success line options), or even Grapple. Acrobatic Strike uses Agility (Coordination) vs Target Defense. This is a standard check. Grapple uses Athletics (St) vs Target Athletics (St), and is an opposed check.

Hi,

For me its got to be based on Grapple action if a Disarm action doesnt adequately cover it (ie, its not a weapon type object). Probably add a misfortune dice too, and if the character doesnt have grapple I'd give an extra challenge dice instead. Athletics/strength makes more sense than agility, unless said object is, say, an eel or a bar of soap or something....
