When is Fight not added in Combat?

While I was designing some of my own item cards, I started thinking about Fight and Combat and realized that Fight doesn't always add into Combat checks (Sledgehammer). I think I'm thinking about it too hard cause I've really confused myself here. Somebody please clarify for me when Fight doesn't affect Combat (and I'm not talking about stuff like Storm of Spirits- that's a whole issue by itself :P ). As in, if I make my own item or spell that gives + X to Fight Checks, will it be counted for Combat as well?

So, there are regular skill checks (fight, will, etc) and then there are special skill checks (combat, horror, etc). Special skill checks add onto the regular skill checks. Are there some rules I'm missing about when a special skill check DOESN'T build off of its corresponding regular skill check? Or is Sledgehammer the only exception here?

edit: After all, isn't that the reason that the spell Revelation of Script is worded the way it is: "+3 to all Lore checks (except spell checks)?" Am I safe in assuming that every time an item says +X to reg skill check it also gives that bonus to the corresponding special skill check, except for Sledgehammer?

Since Combat is a kind of Fight check, a card or effect has to explicitly state that it does not affect the "special" type, or else, by default, it does automatically.

I believe there is only one such example for each special check:

  • Revelation of Script adds to non-Spell Lore checks
  • Makeup Kit adds to non-Horror Will checks
  • Telescope adds to non-Evade Sneak check
  • Sledgehammer gives a different bonus for Combat and non-Combat Fight checks

If your custom card does not say otherwise, then technically, it will add to the special skill check.

Though it works a little differently with Speed and Movement . A card will not give net movement points if says "+1 to Speed checks," but it says "+1 Speed" then it's actually increasing your speed stat, which translates to both movement points and skill check leverage. And, of course, an item that gives you movement points will not help with Speed checks.
