Monsters guarding gates

By Elendil23, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

If a monster is in the same location as a gate do the investigators need to fight or evade it before going through the gate to the Otherworld?

THis may have been answered before - but I have scoured the forum and read through the rules several times and can't seem to find an answer. I know that if 'a gate and monster' appear in a location the gate appears first and the investigator is sucked through, but am not sure whether locations are supposed to be large enough for monstera and gates to co-exist without both being 'encountered' at the same time, which leaves me puzzled as to the order of events.

You ficht monster at the end of the movement phase.

You go through a gate during the arkham encounter phase.

So you have to fight monsters before going through a gate.

You can Sneak the monsters and still go into the other world(assuming your Sneak check is successful). And you can also sneak the monster when you come back(if it's still on the portal) and then destroy a gate in the ''encounter in arkham'' phase.

Actually, when coming back to Arkham from an Other World through a gate, and there are monsters on that gate, you don't have to encounter them until after your first attempt to close/seal it (the following turn).

But you still have to face the monsters on the gate when leaving Arkham to an Other World.

To be specific, Musha, the rule is that you don't have to deal with any monsters on the turn you return from the OW. If you somehow return during phases 4 or 5, the turn will have ended before your first attempt to close the gate, so you don't get the "freebie."

Cant find anything about this in the rulebook. Do you mind showing me your source? Because it is in the movement phase you come back from OW and you FINISH your move into a place that countains a monster. So Sneak/Combat has to be done, no? Did I miss something?

Sure. It is on page 18 of the base game rulebook under the heading "Monsters Guarding Gates."

The claim is a derivative. The rules say you don't have to deal with monsters the turn you return , but I'm just stating that you don't always return on the same turn that you'd have to deal with monsters (movement phase), so you're not always guaranteed to get a freebie. It would be wrong to say that you always get one free pass against the monsters before you try to close the gate.

cool i missed that like a champion :) now that makes things a little more easier. Still you have to Sneak/Combat monsters the round after like a normal movement. thats make sense cause ''monster surge'' were such a pain when I was in OW. Now at least I can have this ''free'' turn to close the gate i came from(and maybe kill monsters in the same place).....that makes my R'lyeh portals easier to close/seal. cause a -3 portal sure was a pain to close when you had to fight some OP monsters before.

I don't believe that the fight is at the end of your movement phase, correct me if I am wrong though.

I believe what you mean is that you can make no further movement during the movement phase. You may think I am being picky, however there are other actions that are possible in the movement phase.

You're not picky, you're right. Its movement is over.

You may do other stuff as long as it's not moving.
