Awesome Ell. Too freaking bad i live 745 miles away or i would have been there for sure.

Hope it turns out to be a great tournament.

Best regards

Perfect format.

Wish I could come, but alas I am half a world away LOL. Please do keep us informed of the games round by round if you can!

And again, the same. Would've even enjoyed just watching. Hopefully when it's all over, someone can do a write up for those us who couldn't make it.

I am looking forward to it as playing at Cons is always a laugh!!

In case people are interested the "other goodies" include enough FFG sleeves and TBG sleeves for an entire set (including expansions) and each of the 16 entrants will end up with a character card (or possibly a toad!) signed by John Goodenough himself! There will also be a signed board for one lucky player!

Plus the miniature to match the character card (or Toad card)!

Deal 3 characters and choose 1. If anyone is killed, they get 1 replacement character dealt at random (the killed character is removed from the game).

Oh great! that's just great! That is only 30 miles away from me, finally a chance to play Talisman and you go and hold on the bloomin' week that I am on holiday. llorando.gif

If you want to do some shopping there is an aptly named one in Kenilworth not that far away....

Priorities mate, cancel your holiday lol

I'll see if I can get some time off work, which is unlikely, but if I can then I'll be there :D

I moved my holiday back (for other reasons) but we are now leaving on the 3rd so still no dice.

On a side note, do you know if any news is going to be leaked at the expo ? The natives are getting restless...

i'm going but,....

i've already booked a pathfinder roleplaying session 10 am till 2pm. If I'd known this was going to be on i'd be there

if i can turn up for the 10 am slot and go to the rpg a little late then i can join in, but that might be a problem with the pathfinder event, they might not be happy with me doing that.

what should i do?

Unless you can alter the Pathfinder gig I think you are stuck, unless you are confident of getting a win within about half an hour!

You should come along and say hi anyway though!

done and thrice done!. i'll be there even if it's to say hi and cheer on the players.

Yes it will be good to see you there. We are going to be on the 1st floor in the purple zone (my favourite colour too)! Demo games on Friday in the Strathallan (10 till late) and again on the Sunday in the expo itself (same place as Saturday).

Elliott.

Well, it was quite a busy day yesterday (and loud... darned wargamers!) and the Talisman Tournament went ahead at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham!

Elliott had been doing sterling work the day before and had brought the stuff over to set up (and would be doing the same on Sunday!) and I jaunted in for a day of Talisman goodness. People were stopping by the tables with fond memories of the game from years gone by and others who had been captivated by the newest edition. There was much talk and speculation about Dragons for some reason... It was also nice to see The Thing In The Attic, from these forums and I must say he looks nothing like his avatar!

And then we got down to business...

Numbers were down, but we managed to get a (slightly delayed) start with 8 players, which meant two games of 4 players with two going through from each and the final. This actually made it more of a relaxed game as we did not have to hurry people along so the initial games were left to play for an hour and a half with the final going down to the death.

Participants and characters in the first rounds were -

Game One:

Lee - Ghoul

Ian - Ogre Chieftain

Josh - Highlander

David - Troll

Game Two:

expo_game_two.jpg

Richard - Sage

Matt - Assassin

Sam - Sprite

Simon - Druid

I haven't got a full rundown of the games sadly as things were rather busy, but others may chime in.

Lee becoming the first Toad of the Tournament on his second turn was probably my favourite part, with Ian's first turn of the card being a Demon to face his craft-challenged Ogre Chieftain being a rather funny second!

The dramas of the first (and only) round were played out and the winners and players in second place going through to the final which was to be played after lunch. As it was we did not have to do much totting up of points as people were being slain all over the place!

David won the first game with Lee going through. What's notable is that this was David's first ever game of Talisman! He had come to accompany Josh and we needed an 8th player and Lee had a spare ticket so he agreed to join. He seemed to pick it up quite easily with the help of the other players and ended up getting to the Crown with his beefed-up Troll.

The second game was a tight contest with Matt overcoming Richard's Sage at the end.

So, we had -

Final:

expo_final_in_progress.jpg

David - Sorceress

Lee - Wizard

Richard - Sprite

Matt - Rogue

David was out first as the play had become a little ruthless! Lee then succumbed to a Finger of Death spell cast by Richard leaving only two remaining.

expo_sprite_stuff.jpg

They had both amassed a hoard of extras and the game carried on to the point where both were ready to attack the Inner Region (and each other!)

Richard got through the Portal first, immediately followed by Matt who attacked him and so it began. The trip through the Inner region was not easy, but Matt ended up at the valley of Fire whilst Richard was left on the Plain of Peril with the help of a few bad rolls. Richard' Sprite then pulled a blinder and used Transference on the Rogue to swap places and only had to hop over to the Crown of Command and start slinging a few Command Spells!

After a few successful rolls (and a few failed ones!) the Rogue got to the Valley of Fire where she was poised to beat the living stuff out of the weaker Sprite, but then Richard rolled and took the Rogue's last life... the Sprite was victorious!!

There then followed a rather emotional awards ceremony (who writes this stuff?) where Richard netted a copy of Talisman Revised 4th Edition which had been donated by Games Lore, enough FFG card sleeves and TBG character sleeves to encapsulate a full game up to Sacred Pool and a set of promo cards (Instructor and Doppelganger) that Richard also got were kindly donated to second-placed Matt who did not have them as yet.

Moment of the day was when Richard (who already has a tricked out copy of Talisman) spotted David and gave him the copy of the Talisman main game so he could start his Talisman "habit"! As you can see, David was so emotional he had to close his eyes for a moment!

expo_welcome_to_the_fold.jpg

So, all in all a rather cool day. Thanks to everyone who participated, and to Games Lore for supplying the game and my indecision over sleeving for donating the card sleeves! partido_risa.gif

Everyone who played got a character card signed by a certain John Goodenough, with a Toad card being given to Lee for his questionable goal of being Toaded first! Simon's daughter scored a copy of the Prophetess card for being very helpful and polite whilst he was playing. I think she liked that. happy.gif

Elliott was a grand ambassador again over the weekend of the Expo, and hopefully next year I will be able to play out for longer than just the day. Who knows, it might be repeated at a games convention this year, but we will have to see.

Hopefully that is a reasonable run down of the day. I am sure others will post if I got anything wrong!

Awesome rundown. Not as good as being there to watch, but then Talisman isn't really a spectator sport so much. Thanks for taking the time... and the pictures were an added bonus!

Thanks a ton for the update. Excellent story, bummer you didn't get the big turnout, but it sounds like a great time was had by all.

Kudo's for Richard giving a copy of Talisman to David. I hope he reads this and feels all warm and fuzzy inside for being a ideal ambassador for this great game.

Awesome awesome awesome.

If anyone was wondering from the pictures what the different coloured cones were for:

Yellow cones = Gold
Purple cones = Fate
Orange cones = Experience for defeating creatures that are not Enemies!

Ell.

Ooh ooh. I just remembered that Richard also scored a signed copy of the Talisman game board for his troubles...

talismanamsilat said:

Can you explain that to me? Does the orange cone represent Craft or Strenght or both ?

I think what Elliot means is "creatures" that are not an Adventure card. Say you have to fight the drunken Farmer in the Tavern. You'd gain Orange trophy points for that victory since there is no card to keep. Now we need to know how they are/were used.

There are a number of house rules for allowing a character to gain trophy points from defeating creatures that don't have a card (such as a dragon coming at you out of the Cave). Most such rules still designate the trophy points according to Strength or Craft, so the Orange cone approach may be something different.
