Returning Player - Asshai/Stannis Deck

By Darguth, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hello all,

I played GOT back before it moved into the LCG format, but haven't collected much in several years now. With the inception of the HBO series and the upcoming release of ADwD, my interest has been rekindled.

I'm a Baratheon player, and my deck is quite dated and unfocused (had a pretty limited card pool). With the specific card set offered by the LCG format I'm looking to build a more focused deck and wanted to get some advice on which expansions to purchase.

I'm looking to build a thematic deck that centers around Stannis Baratheon with an emphasis on Melisandre and the Asshai trait in particular.

Any advice on what expansions to buy? What tactics to employee with the cards found therein?

Thanks!

I've got an Asshai Shadows deck that might be a good place to start. Core Stannis could easily be slotted into it. It is slightly dated but for the most part except for a plot adjustment or slotting in something to replace Val or Narrow Escape I'd leave it mostly the same. To construct it will require a number of sets, mostly from Kings Landing cycle and Brotherhood without Banners Cycle. In general though most of the Asshai support is in Brotherhood Without Banners, Core and Kings of the Storm

As I said, I'm returning from a pretty long hiatus, but how does the Shadows mechanic work?

Pay 2 to place a card into Shadows during Marshaling and then each player has the option to bring something out of Shadows in player order at the beginning of every phase by paying the printed cost. Theres a plot from the Kings Landing cycle that lets you place 2 cards in Shadows when revealed without paying any cost, and theres a plot that discards all cards in Shadows at the end of Marshaling. Shadows is a pretty strong mechanic and remains so imo because there aren't a lot of counters to it... see Syrio Forel and Arya Stark .

OK, so I may not get everything for a competitive deck, but grabbing the Core box, the KotStorm deck, and grabbing the Rituals of Rhllor chapter packs are a good starting point, yes?

I would buy the Brotherhood without banners cycle packs as the Baratheon cards in that cycle focus on the Asshai trait in Baratheon. Rituals of R'hllor has the most,6 cards, and then the other packs in the cycle add 2 more cards per pack.
