Clarification/Interpreting the "Deadly" ability

By Burekeii, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi there,

Can someone please clarify what happens when I make a challenge with a deadly character? if it is opposed does that mean I can kill another as well? if it's unnapposed what happens? Also, does this apply to power/intrigue challenges also?

Surely if it was an intrigue challenge it wouldnt kill the other character?

Deadly is a passive effect which kills only participating defending characters, so if there are no defenders left, then there is nobody to kill.

Deadly works in any challenge type.

1. Determine winner of challenge
2. Challenge result is implemented
3. Reward for unopposed challenge is awarded
4. Renown is awarded

5 passive effects (including deadly, vigilant, vengeful)

Just to be perfectly clear, assume this situation:

1. Eddark Stark chosen as attacking in a military Challenge

2. opposing direwolf pup declared as defending

3. eddard stark wins combat

Now, would the claim happen before Eddard's Deadly triggers? Or after? The way I played it previously, the First player gets to choose, and it's actually a pretty big deal :P

Deadly is always resolved after the claim so usually people will have their defender char die by the claim so nobody is left to be killed by deadly.

Ok, see, that's the way I read it at first, but my game group argued and argued til I finally said 'ok whatever you say boss'

Thanks for the clarification!

Download the FAQ for AGoT and read up on the timing section (especially the flowcharts). That should give you a good idea of what happens when.

Deadly works exactly the same in every challenge type. Defending characters will die if the attacker controls more Deadly characters in intrigue and power, the same as they do in military.

In fact, Deadly is much more useful during intrigue and power challenges because of the very common "I kill my one defender for claim so there is no one to die for Deadly" military challenge situation that Bolanzo mentions.
