Novels

By Plinko2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hey fellow Arkham Horrorers!

This is my first time to the forums, and I have a pretty simple question.

Are there any novels in the Lovecraftian collection that have to do with Arkham Horror specifically. For instance the era that the games are set in? Thanks alot!!

Uh. All of them?

Arkham Horror is based around Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, and many of the monsters and locations are taken straight from Lovecraft's works. There's not a story that follows Arkham Horror's plot of gates opening exactly, but to meet the monsters and the Mythos, here's a couple of good critical readings (all of which should be available online for free, as they are well past copyright):

The Call of Cthulhu

At the Mountains of Madness

The Dunwich Horror

Dreams of the Witch House

Shadow over Innsmouth

The Shadow out of Time

The Whisperer in Darkness

The Colour Out of Space

Pickmans Model

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

These are mostly of his longer works, but even then, the longest (At the Mountains of Madness) is only several chapters long. That will give you a good solid base for the monsters and locations of Arkham, and you'll probably meet a few allies there as well. If you only have time for one or two of those, read Call of Cthulhu and Mountains of Madness first, and the rest in any order. Have fun and enjoy!

Here is a good link. I actually had to check around a bit for this since some older popular sites that hosted his works seem to have gone under recently.

I don't know what country you're in, but if you're in the U.S. Barnes and Nobles sells the Collected Lovecraft in hardcover for about $13. You could probably get it on the internet otherwise?
