Introducing new players to the game.

By kozz, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey guys,

This saturday i'm having some friends over that want to try descent for the first time. We'll be playing with 4 heroes & WoD+AoD rules. I'd like to know which scenario you guys would recommend. Preferrably taking around 3 to 4 hours and a bit challenging enough to be interesting for first timers.

Can be any official scenario out of Jitd,WoD or AoD or a user made scenario.

3 to 4 hours is too short to introduce new players to any of the quests in the original game; they'll never move fast enough to finish in that time. Given that, JITD scenario 2 is short and easy, and you may be able to get it all done in 4 hours if you set everything up beforehand. The WoD scenarios are much too hard, and the AoD scenarios are far too long.

Hi,

I think the 2nd quest from WoD is also very playable, especially when there are 4 players. IMHO it isn't too heavy for the heroes and it's one of my favourites ( the hero players liked it also and won enfadado.gif ). Of course, quest no. 1 from JitD can be seen as a sort of introduction to the game and isn't very heavy and long.

Ok that might be a good idea.

I think the first three JitD are a bit too easy especially with 4 heroes. So i'd rather do a more complex one that offers at least some kind of challenge.

I played as an overloard the JitD scenario 3 (I guess, the one with Kisst-Ha Naga) with three heroes, 2 players were adults that have played a lot of different RPG's and board games but not Descent, and one was my son, that has previously played Descent, and various more complex games. I had everything set up ready. It took 5 hours to get to about the middle of the dungeon, where I finished them off. The heroes got one of the crystal Nagas activated and killed.

So, learning the rules, getting used to the game and playing a first scenario takes a lot of time. Also, it takes time for new players to figure out what to do, and negotiate the actions together. It takes a while to figure out whether to use potions or fatigue, when to open doors, etc.

Might be a better Idea to really play the scenario 1 or 2 from JitD, though I'm not so sure if the scenario 2 ( the giant brothers) is so fun.

What about "The Chase" one that can be downloaded from the support section of the Descent page? I've heard that's a pretty good one for introducing players.

Ok guys thanks for the input.

I'll check the suggested quests and i'll let u know what i picked and how it went.
