Shubby Madness (My Precious)

By Ahzrab, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

This would be the deck I would play in a tourney right now, if there would've been any regionals in my country (Germany sucks in CoC activity-wise...).

If you can't play it, why not share it.

The deck was built out of pure randomness at first (I asked a friend which factions should I try to mix and he said Hastur/Shub...).

My first thought was: They won't work well together... and I did some half-assed deckbuilding. I usually favor to play agency/cthulhu, so this deck was kind of a step child and at this time, I had a pretty strong agency/cthulhu deck (At least I thought so...).

So a friend came over for a few rounds of good ol' CoC and I gave him this deck or to be precise an alpha version of this one (I made a few adjustments over the time). We played about 8 games and my agethulhu deck was totally crushed. I couldn't believe it. Since that desastrous defeat, I'm still trying to build an equal powerful deck, that manages to win against this one but to be honest, I had not much success.

Decks with pure terror icon characters can be a bit more work but I never lost against them (On a side note: My meta is pretty small).

Well what we have there...

Some resource acceleration, some investigation icons, some old ones, some deck searching effects, some unusual characters (MBH, Dangerous Inmate), support card destruction, card control (IO) and the greatest fear (I love it!!!!). There could be more character removal but it's not that bad (Thanks to the rats) and some additional low cost characters with investigation icons wouldn't hurt.

So here it is...tada...

Character s
Performance Artist (Core) x3
Gibbering Soul (TAD) x3
Diseased Sewer Rats (SoA) x3
Dangerous Inmate (SfW) x3

Agoraphobia (Core) x3
Scotophobia (Core) x3

Looks strange, plays very well and has no agency in it! :)

Additional options: 1 Scotophobia + 1 Agoraphobia out for 2 Stalking Hounds or 1 Enchanted Wood + 1 Valley of Pnakh

I would love to hear some comments & feedback!

After a few more plays with the deck, I would definitely put in 2 enchanted wood for now (Helps Victoria/Inmate/TGF..against terror factions).

Also, I reduced one Snow Graves for another Agoraphobia.

I'm not particularly good at judging decks but it looks quite nice to me. The Cthonian cards definitely make me want to play something with Shub-Niggurath. I'd probably replace one copy of the Seventy Steps to get that third copy of the Snow Graves back in. I believe it's a crucial card.

I haven't yet tried to create a deck using the cards from the current cycle - I prefer to wait until a cycle is complete. I might try combining Shub with Yog which I've really grown to like. Ideally, I'd want the deck to be able to win by depleting the opponent's deck if my primary strategy doesn't work as planned.

you're right, since the deck isn't specifically based around seventy steps, I think I can lose one.

I was always a big snow graves fan. Good times if your opponent can't get his pesky descendant back.

Yes, I like the deck too. I particularly like the strong start with greatest fear. I f you manage to get it first round its quite a hit, and makes up for the realative slowness of your start. Just a couple of things. apart from a cthonian you really might need, what s the purpose of shocking transformation ?

Also, I don't particularly like mistic bounty hunter. How about hungry dark young or old man from the woods ?

Well Shocking Transformation helps me to increase my options. Since I got a lot of characters with actions for different situations, I can adapt more easily.

Usually I bring more Descendants to the table but it's no shame to sacrifice a cthonian if you need a victoria glasser for your two Greatest Fears on your hand. Or you play a ST on a sewer rat, get a harvesting mi-go out, attach a descendant to your 2 resource domain and bring y'golonac to the table.

There are some really neat combos out there.

I played a few shub decks with ST and expensive in & out of faction cards and I didn't like it that much. You have a problem if you draw them, the resourcing isn't optimized and they're pretty fragile if your opponent can take control over them or send them right back to your hand.

Yeah Mystic B. Hunter probably isn't the best addition synergy-wise but I like to have an option to bring Infernal Obsession back to my hand. It's probably still one of the most important Hastur cards (And against a Cthulhu deck, you usually need a good way to bring your attachments back). Also the Hunter is a solid cost 3 card even without his ability. Old Man from the Woods was an early option for me but since I know they'll reprint Kingsport Dreams. I want to add Granny Orne in the future.

It's a shame you won't be at the regionals. I tested my decks vs. yours being played by a friend and it gave me really a hard time!

Yeah I would love to go to the tourney in Amsterdam but sadly I have to work the whole weekend...maybe I'll have time to attend Stahleck later this year.
