Skalar the Chaos Mage and the Skull of Everlasting Death

I had once created this enemy for an Earth-bound setting involving the old White Wolf Street Fighter setting, but with modifications and additions it becomes excellent to use with the 40k setting. I have a number of backgrounds for native defenders and their powers and such, but that's all on my blackberry. Once I figure out how to sync my phone to my computer I can add them (once I synched to Yahoo, but that's no longer working).

I have few hard and fast rules right now. More fluff than anything. A good scale would be Skalar and his Hands are about a Primarch strength. Overlords would be somewhat stronger than a Chapter Master, and then everything inbetween for their forces.

Google Chrome finally let me do copy/paste. Yah!

Now if I can only get my Blackberry sync to work to get my notes off of my phone...

Once upon a time there was a great chaos sorcerer called Skalar the Chaos Mage. He poured the warp energies from across the cosmos into a crystalline skull which he called the Skull of Everlasting Death. With this artifact, he raised a near endless force and began conquering system after system at the end of the Age of Strife and just before the start of the Great Crusade. Everywhere he went, Skalar was fought as worlds once part of humanity's old empire fought back with varied unique psychic powers. Still, Skalar's might spread unchecked as his ten Overlords and His Left and Right Hands of Chaos helped him overpower defenders with vast numbers that were constantly replenished by the Skull of Everlasting Death's power.

His end came quickly during the time of the Great Crusade across a hundred battlefields as Space Marine Legions and the Imperial Army attacked to bring down his corrupt empire. The Thousand Sons Legion were the ones to lead the battle against Skalar's capital and smash his defenses. Magnus the Red and Skalar the Chaos Mage fought a furious duel that lasted hours and destroyed the remains of his capital city. In the end, Skalar was killed. The psychic backlash from his death, destroyed the Overlords and his armies to the man. The only things that remained were the artifact, and two servants. The Left and Right Hands of Chaos.

The artifact was the Skull of Everlasting Death. A crystalline human skull on a silver chain. All attempts by the Thousands Sons to destroy (or use) the artifact failed. They resorted to hiding the device within their great city on Prospero. The Left Hand of Chaos was Sikarin Tsooth. A twisted, shape shifting sorcerer of vast power. The Right Hand of Chaos was Korul Golbez. Skalar's military genius and warrior of enormous power. These two were imprisoned in crystal coffins and the Thousand Sons sealed them with spells of great power that required the life blood of a Thousand Son to lock it. The first thought was to destroy them, but it seemed that without the power of the Skull of Everlasting Death, no amount of damage would truly kill them. Every hundred years, another two Thousand Sons space marines gave of their lives to keep the Hands sealed away for Magnus foretold that if they were allowed to go free then they once the Skull of Everlasting Death regained enough power, then they could bring back Skalar and rebirth his empire.

At the time of the Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves recovered the crystal coffins and the Skull and brought them to the Emperor. He saw the warnings and instructions written on the sides of the coffins. He saw the immense power contained within the Skull of Everlasting Death. He had these items interred deep within the palace where he once had his lab that created the Primarchs. He had the Mechanicum bring forth all of the Thousand Son gene-seed he could find and set about creating new Thousand Son space marines so that two could be slain every century. The Siege of Terra destroyed that great work and so in the darkness that followed, the Inquisition set about capturing Thousand Son marines in order to keep the Hands in their prison. They found a single loyalist Thousand Son in hiding and brought him to Terra. He enacted a ritual to be able to sacrifice bits of himself in order to keep the Hands sealed away for there was precious few Thousand Sons with lifeblood remaining once Ahriman's Rubic had been enacted. In order to distance himself from his past and connect him to his current duty, the Thousand Son warrior had been renamed the Guardian and has remained thus for thousands of years. He is given renegade psykers to attempt to replenish his dwindling powers.

Over a thousand years ago, he was interrupted during his rituals and Sikarin Tsooth managed to escape with the Skull of Everlasting Death. He was grievously wounded during the fighting and though he keeps giving of himself to keep the other Hand imprisoned...soon he may be giving his last and a new Thousand Son space marine will have to be found.

The Guardian

Once a part of the Thousand Sons Legion before the Horus Heresy, Khusator is a marine without a Legion. He has been named the Guardian by the Emperor and his duty is to safeguard the Hands of Chaos and prevent their escape. He was a powerful sorcerer who under heavy wards, managed to escape the effects of Ahriman's grand magic that damned the rest of the Legion. Over the years, he has sacrificed bits of himself to keep the Hands sealed within their coffins while consuming renagade psykers brought to him by the Inquisition to keep himself alive. When his rituals failed to keep Sikarin Tsooth imprisoned, he lost the battle to contain the Left Hand of Chaos and was badly wounded from the escape. He uses his powers to try to discover the location of Sikarin Tsooth and send agents of the throne out to recapture him and imprison him back in the crystal coffin. His health and power has been drained by both the battle with Sikarin and his attempts to track him and so it is uncertain if he will survive the next rituals to keep the other Hand imprisoned. Attempts have been made to create new Space Marines from Thousand Son gene-seed stock, but nothing has come close enough to what the Thousand Sons once were to work.

Sikarin Tsooth

A powerful shapeshifting sorcerer who is known as the Left Hand of Chaos. His dominance was sorcery, politics, and manipulations of the mind. He is a master of twisting anyone into service to his cause by using any manipulations at hand. He will use praise, abuse, blackmail, bribes, and anything else that will get his way done and break the spirit of his target. His twisted appetites appeal to all of the Chaos Gods and he serves Chaos Undivided in name, but more importantly Skalar the Chaos Mage. Sikarin travels the galaxy, working to increase the power of the Skull of Everlasting Death's power by visiting warp storms and places of powerful emotions. He has slipped through the Halls of Power in the Imperium, on many Eldar Craftworlds, through the Dark Eldar's dark city, the harsh climate of many Orc empires, and so forth in his quest. He has built up a millions of contacts, followers, and servants all over the place. Though few know his true name or intent. He often instigates wars and conflicts in order to draw on the emotional energy for the Skull he carries hidden in his robes. He has many identities in many places to draw upon for his countless schemes. A Lord Inquisitor, a weirdboy, a Eldar Warlock, a Dark Eldar Wytch, and so on.

He bears a force staff called the Staff of the Seven Elders. It is a powerful relic dating back to when mankind first went out into the stars and built an empire. It serves as a powerful psyhic focus, allowing Sikarin to channel the energies of the warp without danger. It also proves as an defense. Any psyhic ability used against him is instead absorbed. The psy points strength of the attack is instead added to Sikarin's pool for his next attack either sorcerous power or force staff strike. There is a limit to what can be absorbed at one time, but that limit is not yet known. He has been seen taking on dozens of sorcerers at once and sending back the power of dozens of attacks in one tremendous spell that cracked the land to the very mantle.

Soul Harvest

A twisted force sword of glowing green crystal. As Sikarin weilds this sword, it can be seen to be full of tiny motes of light. These are the souls of those that Sikarin has slain with the sword. Once slain, they are absorbed by the sword and added to Sikarin's immense power. He can choose one stat to increase by 5 or his if they were a psyker, increase his psy points by 1. The sword is fragile in that meeting another force sword (or power sword) in a parry has the chance to break the weapon. The sword has an armor of 25 and Wounds of 500. When an attack is parried by either Sikarin or his opponent, have the opponent roll for damage as if hit and apply to the sword if the armor is defeated. No penetration works. The sword can also be shot or attacked. Every ten wounds of damage frees a soul, reducing Sikarin's stats instantly and attacks him for 1d10 energy damage (no armor or toughness bonus). If the sword is destroyed, all souls go free and attack Sikarin before fading.

Korul Golbez

The Right Hand of Chaos. Korul was known as General Golbez and he was master of all matters military and physical. He was known for his ability to shrug off the most powerful of blows without wearing armor. He was able to draw upon the power of the warp to increase his physical power (strength, toughness, agility) and size. During an extended conflict, it was said that he nearly defeated even the vaunted power of Leman Russ before Magnus the Red was able to kill Skalar the Chaos Mage and end the source of Golbez's power. He sleeps still in the crystal coffin. Once of Sikarin Tsooth's missions is to attack during the time of sacrifice when

Axe of Thirst

Korul Golbez used this great force axe in battle against the enemies of Skalar. The more blood that the axe drew, the more blood that it thirsted for. For each blow that deals out critical damage, the axe gains a +5 to strike and a +1 to damage. This bonus lasts until the end of the combat. As Golbez swings the axe, it lets out a bloodthirty roar that chills the spine of all those nearby.

The Fleets of Skalar the Chaos Mage

Skalar's mighty fleet of starships was drawn from during the Dark Age of Technology and feature many ancient ships even by the current Imperium standards. When Skalar was defeated, his ships slipped into the Warp while their crews perished. Many ships have been found drifting in the Warp and brought back to real space to be refitted for the Imperial Navy. Should Skalar rise again, his ships will once again be filled with his dread crews of monsters no matter who is currently using the ship at the time. As time went on into the time of the Great Crusade, Skalar captured many enemy ships from all factions to be refit and used in his fleets.

Monolith Worm

This great worm flies through the darkness of the void and is a vast carrier for the fleets of Skalar the Chaos Mage. It appears to be a great segmented worm, not unlike a great earthworm in space. However, it's hide is thick and can shrug off all but the most powerful of weapons. It's maw can open wide enough to swallow the mightiest Imperium battleship whole and this is indeed how the worm can capture enemy vessels. It swallows them whole and in the deep, darkness of it's belly swarms of enemies come from inside the worm's belly to board the enemy vessel and capture it. Then a warp gate opens deep within and the ship is transported to orbit above Skalar's capital world. This warp gate can be used to quickly transport vessels from one worm to another or to the gate above Skalar's capital world. With Skalar defeated, this gate remains inactive. All attempts to destroy or move the alien warp gate have failed. The Monolith Worms slumber in the Warp, unresponsive to attempts at communication or violence. During battle, the Monolith Worm was capable of taking on entire fleets, firing strange bursts of energy from bumps on the sides of the beast. At times, it can emit a beam of energy from it's great maw that can destroy anything in it's path. If enough damage is done to “kill” the worm, it's maw will open and the warp gate to Skalar's captial world will open. All of the boarding creatures will be dead and there will be an opening of about 24 hours to mount a strike to the captial world. After that, the worm will slip into the Warp to regenerate...something that takes months to years to happen. During that time, it slumbers. Immune to all damage.

Overlords

Once returned to power, Skalar the Chaos Mage selects ten beings to be his Overlords. If they accept this bond of power, their abilities are magnified by the power of the Skull of Everlasting Death and uncounted armies of beings from their (and Skalar's) imagination along with many attendant champions of great power. Their power and lives become tied to Skalar's well being. He can sever the connection at anytime, killing the Overlord and all of it's forces in a single thought. If Skalar is defeated, all of the Overlords and armies created by the Skull of Everlasting Death are instantly destroyed. All that would remain will be the Left and Right Hands of Chaos and any servants not bound by the Skull of Everlasting Death's power (which can still be a major threat, though those of Skalar's reign went into hiding once their master was defeated).
