Somebody should make an online version

By Mattr0polis, in Battlestar Galactica

There's all those websites I see where you can play different board games online like Dominion or Carcassonne, and some other board games people have made unofficial programs to play them online, like Talisman. That'd be sweet if someone did this for BSG. That way all of us hardcore people could play it as much as we wanted, without needing to wait for 2-5 other local people to play.

Also, I have a Mac, so someone should make it play on that. ;)

Would anyone else be all in for an online version?

Count me in.

The easiest thing would be to use VASSAL. Battlelore's already on that as well.

Just curious, does that run on a Mac? I'm guessing no. sad.gif

I'd be down for sure.

I think it would lose a lot of its appeal to play online and in a chat room since half the fun is arguing about who the cylons are and accusing your friends of treachery.

VASSAL is a JAVA program. So I am pretty sure it work on PC and MAC, and others...

Indeed. I'm not sure how well this game mixes with internet anonymity.

While I'm also unsure how well this would work online, I would definitiely play it. If I can see the source code, I might even try to make an AI for it.

I think having a good experience with this online would hinge on the same stuff as having a good experience with this game in real life: it would depend on the people you play it with.

If you get a good group of people, you are bound to have a great experience, online or not.

Yes, you can use it on a mac, pc, or even on your cell phone for that matter...

Actually, there was a PBF game (play by forum post) that concluded recently, that was a resounding success.

Cool, pity I never heard of it.

To hell with VASSAL. Tried getting it set up today and had no luck. The "simple" manual did not produce a working copy of VASSAL. Sure, tons of people have figured it out and use it all of the time, but I don't have time to experiment. If they can't spell it out correctly, then I have better things to do. Bummer because there were a number of games on VASSAL I'd like to try out.

???

Go to the VASSAL engine website ( www.vassalengine.org ), click "Quick Launch".

Quick launch doesn't work for me. I DID eventually get VASSAL set up with the manual download after mostly ignoring the instructions. The next thrill was getting a module set up. Trial and error time again, but I got one set up. WHEW! I looked at the instruction screenshots and they're for version 2.3.2 while the latest version is 3.0. I'm sure they'll get around to updating that as well, but the whole experience was a bit frustrating after being told how quick and easy the whole process is. I was fortunate in that I had a current user help me out with it just about an hour after I left my frustrated message. I'd have deleted the message... but these are the FFG forums, where Quality is Job Two.

I had the same install problems as you and had to download the beta version etc...
Vassal definately has a learning curve. Your best bet is to have someone show you how to do it once you get it set up or play the game offline as both players (you have to switch manually back and forth) and trial and error your way to knowledge. It seems to be good if you have the time to really learn the ins and outs of the games controls online.

As for an online version of this game I would definately be in! I've only been able to get in one face to face game so far and really want to give it another go.

For people that want more interaction than a chat room in vassal could provide you could always try Teamspeak or Ventrillo for free live voice chat. Setting up a free server on your computer isn't too difficult.

Thanks all for the information... I never heard of Vassal until recently. Going to check it out. And Battlestar Galactica would definately be nice for online in my opinion!

I am just now starting another forum game of BSG, if any of you want to join and give it a try, just drop me an note.

I do! Where is it?
