Increasing Call of Cthulhu activity and blogs at CardGameDB

By Darksbane, in CoC General Discussion

First a question for the Call of Cthulhu players, I've noticed that activity for the Call of Cthulhu LCG on CardGameDB has been dropping off lately and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to things I might be missing which would make the site more useful for the Call of Cthulhu players. I'm a casual player when it comes to CoC so beyond what the deckbuilder already does and the card search I can't think of anything but perhaps yall more advanced CoC players can.

Also with regionals coming up I thought this would be a good time to offer a blogging feature at CardGameDB.com

Blogs can be for an individual or for a group and I was hoping that individuals or multiple people from various metas would be interested in blogging their experiences during this years regionals and perhaps just thoughts on the game or games in general.

Take a look at my first blog post for a list of features and in the next few weeks I'll be adding in custom themes to choose from and writing up guides on how to customize the look and feel of your blog. Also if you already have a blog somewhere that is great too, you can add your blog to CardGameDB as an external blog, and even automatically import entries by using the RSS entry importing feature.

Perhaps the question is what can be offered at your forum that is not offered here? For me personally, I prefer to visit as few fora as possible, so I'd rather have everyone here posting their questions, comments, diatribes, etc.

Well I'm not just talking about forum participation, but usage of the Call of Cthulhu utilities in general is low. But I'll list what my forum offers that this one does not.

Full card spoilers with all LCG images - the ability to rate cards and comment on them

Advanced card search - search for a card by pretty much any criteria

Online deckbuilder with the ability to create decks, save them online, submit them to the site to be included in the decks section. Decks built with the deckbuilder have graphs of deck stats and cardtype breakdowns, and you can export the deck you have loaded as txt file or bbcode.

Blog

Member Map

Calendar to promote events

The ability to create card hover links in any posts so you can just hover over a card name to see an image of it.

An actual Private Message system that doesn't force you to go back and forth through email

You can link up with your facebook and/or Twitter accounts

There is more but it would take a while to list it all. I'm not really trying to drive away users from here, I'm just curious about the differences between the activity I see in my Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings section compared to Call of Cthulhu, and if there is something that I could do to make the Call of Cthulhu utilities I provide more useful.

I think your advanced card search is excellent - I use it all the time. Especially as a Mac user, I can't use the deckbuilder program, so your website is about all I've got. Thanks for that!

Frankly, I find it a shame that your site is not more popular concerning CoC. It has everything this forum should already have for those games and is only missing W:I. The functionality is tremendous.

The deck building is great, the card search is great as well. I will sometimes use Cthulhu Dabbler before going to your site since the dabbler is instantly on and I do not have to jump through any hoops to get to the database. Not that it takes that much longer on your site to get to.

I know you are a BGG member as well, so I am sure you have noticed the high traffic in the AGoT & LotR forums there and here in comparison to CoC on the very same sites. I would say they are just as active for each game at BGG, FFG and your forums.

I honestly do not think you could do a whole lot more to attract members. I think it is more to do with the community (or the comparative near lack there of) than it does with your forum.

The most active CoC forum I know of is Le Cenacle. They seem to have a tireless interest in europe regarding online presence. Perhaps communicating with moderators there such as Prodigee could help.

One point of critique I can offer though is that your calendar feature seems dead. I tried to add a date for Arkham Nights last October and it never got approved. So I just forgot about it and never looked back.

I love your site. Great deck builder. I use it all the time.

What I'm missing in the CoC community despite user activity is some up to date site like boss.sverok.net/CoC/index.html , where people write articles about new deck combinations and cards.

What OS are you using? I ask because I also run a Mac and am able to use the deckbuilder.

I would like to be able to edit a deck that I have posted in the forums. Since the AP's come out monthly it would be helpful to keep a deck from aging out after a month. I would like to post a deck, edit it when new tech is released and follow-up with comments about why I made the change.

Sometimes there is a delay in a new AP getting posted. I noticed the new one is up, so no problem there. Again, since there is a quick AP turnaround getting new cards up quickly is a high priority. If there is anything I can do to help with the spoiler flow let me know.

Thanks for the reply guys. Some good stuff in here. If the community in general for CoC is just smaller I guess it makes sense then.

@Hellfury - W:I support coming soon. And the Calendar was totally my fault. I didn't realize I had the permissions set wrong but that should be fixed now. Also the Calendar will be getting a upgrade in the next couple months to have much more functionality.

@Ahzrab - I would love to have some CoC articles up on CardGameDB. I just can't find anyone to write them. I'm OK enough at GoT to write some articles for it but I'm not very good at CoC so I don't think my mediocre writing skills and mediocre play would produce anything worth reading. If anyone is interested in writing some though let me know.

@Tokhuah - I'm planning on starting coding for W:I soon and when doing so I'm going to add some features to the deckbuilder and one of the things I'm planning is being able to edit or overwrite already submitted decks and show what the most recent asylum pack was when the deck was built. Once W:I is done I'll update the other game's deckbuilders with the same features. As far as delays go on Asylum packs I'm working on that, I've got a local comic shop that said they'd be willing to order the pack for me so I'm going to try them out to see if they can get it in and get it to me sooner than Miniature Market or CoolStuffInc.

Thanks again guys for the advice and suggestions

OS X 10.6.7. I'm talking about Nyarlozorbec's Deck Builder. It is designed to run on Windows 95 or higher.

Ah, Darksbane, you know I try to use your site for most everything. AGoT, CoC, and now LotR, I'll be ecstatic when you get the WI section completed as well.
