My first model

By naotakayi, in Dust Tactics

I couldn't help myself really.

After having this game for two days I had to give it a shot. Although I am in the midst of preparing for a 40K tournament and a 40K campaign I had to paint one of the Dust mini's to get it out of my system. The ink is still wet on this one and I need to do the base but what do you guys think?

great looking figure! I can't wait to see more!

I finished the base and decided to paint an American soldier as well. He proved to be more fun then I expected and a nice contrast to the grim Grenadier !

Thats better, I can't stand models without finished bases. They look really good lookd like you spent some time on the camo jacket, and you have just got to love the washes you can now get.

Superior job. Wish I could paint that well, but my eyes are too weak. Had my irises burned twice. Lucky to have any vision.

We had a bit of a game of Dust and I was a little bummed by the BBQ squad. Firing both its crazy main weapons, as well as 5 demo charges and knifing...seemed way overpowered and silly. I also would like a bit more for things to be a little less decisive. Wounded is ok rather then only insta kills.

Still I saw potential and the models are amazing.

Yeah BBQ squad is insane however they are costed higher than other standard infantry squads. The only characters that get wounded is the heroes and the vehicles. I suppose the grunts are supposed to die quick and it makes for a fast game that way.

Also when you consider the BBQ Boys can do nothing unless they are right next to you, it sorta balances things out. Keep your distance and throw out sacrificial lambs to get them into crossfires.

yes, as an ally player, the bbq squad hasnt been horrible for my friends to combat. just dont let them get close.

Thats easier said than done though, in lot of scenarios they can get right up close without casualties. When we first started to play they were no real problem as you could take out a few first until I stupidly suggested to my enemy to putt a hero in with the unit to soak up damage. So now with the scenarios close terrain and a hero meat shield they are nigh invincible. Sure they eventually go down but not without taking down a walker and a unit or 2 first.

i play axis unless i have to play the allies for a demo ( i usually let who ever i demo the game to pick which side they want )

the BBQ squad isnt so bad , even with a hero attached .

just counter their hero with one of yours , and keep in mind that if you have more boards , as the field gets bigger , the BBQ squad is harder pressed to get to you , and you have more room to maneuver to counter them . .

Eeek, I learnt the hard way not to get a hero anywhere near the BBQ squad as when the BBQ get to go first, they have enough firepower to take down the hero and squad in 1 attack. 18 Dice attack hurts bad. In the opening moves I try to position my units to threaten something important of his army, he then has a choice of wiping out a unit or 2 of mine (normally depends on whether the flamer gets a hit on a walker or not) or maybe losing a walker himself.

So I suppose its a case of the old saying, "The best form of defence is attack". But they are still a nightmare when defending an objective and you can't get to shoot them first without moving and therfore they are able to soak up damage with the hero. We also now have the Command Squads at our disposal so this should add some more interesting tactical options in dealing with them - but am not looking forward to seeing them have 2 go's a turn :(

BBQ squads are nasty. But, also remember with the new releases coming, such as sniper. That BBQ will have to be used even more carefully.

And it's not like the Axis doesn't have nasty units of it's own... Sigrid with a Laser Grenadier squad can make short work of just about ANYTHING using the Laser and Berserk rules.

That BBQ Boys squad can't hurt you if it's full of Laser holes, now can it? :)

after 250+ games i cant even remotely guess how many times i have seen the BBQ squad roll 3 or fewer hits on those 18 dice , but its a lot .

while i love the idea of running around with a flame thrower and some shotguns in this game , with or without a hero ; i am just as perfectly happy to face the BBQ squad with my axis , they really arent that great .

i can completely attest to Kris's statement on how the BBQ squad normally rolls those masssive amounts of attacks. i hate my dice...

Im curious as to the colors you used for the minis. The American soldiers in particular. Thanks
