Newbie Question

By rhino1976, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Have played the main game a few times and am thinking of getting an expansion or two but which ones/one to get?

Curse of Pharoh seems to be in the process of been re-done, so presume it is not worth buying the previous edition now, although not sure how long it will be till the revised edition comes out.

Is it worth getting any of the others before Pharoh comes out? Get the impression from the product list that Dunwich is been re-done, as it is listed as not yet released, but thought it was the second expansion made, so presumably that is because it is a revised edition as well or just an identicle re print of the same game? If it is just a re print is it worth getting before Pharoh or waiting till after?

Is both Pharoh and Dunwich are been revised, is it worth getting King in Yellow without pharoh and/or Dunwich?

Am loosing sanity just thinking about it! In fact am loosing stamina as well due to banging my head against my desk lol

Any help/comments/musings appeciated.

Thanks

I haven't heard anything about Dunwich being revised, so I would assume the reprint is identical to the old version. I certainly hope they aren't planning to revise every expansion. Seriously, FFG, that's what a second edition is for.

Honestly, if I had it all to do over again, I'd probably just stick to the big boxes and not buy the small ones. Not to disparage the small box expansions, they just seem too "separated" from the rest of the game. They CAN be merged indefinitely, but they don't seem like they should be, and it's too much work to do the "visiting exhibition" style IMHO. The only exception being the personal stories from Lurker (I think?)

If you're itching to buy an expansion right now, I would go with one of the big boxes. In order of favourites I'd say Innsmouth, Dunwich, Kingsport, but really all three are good in their own ways. If you're set on getting the small expansions too, I would agree the Dark Pharoah is probably not worth buying until the revised edition is out, but all the others are fair game, whatever you can find nearby.

Quite fond of Lurker, myself. Even if you don't use the Herald or new gates constantly (we bounce back and forth on them), the personal stories cards can easily be made a permanent part of your game, and it adds to the location/Mythos/Gate decks as well (and there's no reason for those to not be permanently added). And some new items and such, of course...again, really no reason not to permanently add these.

Plus, when not using the Herald, the Power tokens (which come in a pretty good supply) become very handy markers for anything else you need to mark in the game. Card telling you to mark it with stamina? Mark it with Power to avoid confusion. Card telling you to mark it with Clue tokens? Mark it with power to avoid confusion. And so on and so forth. Not really a reason to buy Lurker, but it is actually quite handy that way.

As far as I can tell, Dunwich is just being reprinted, not revised. I would agree to not get the Dark Pharaoh until the revision comes out.

For big box expansions, really, from what I've heard any are good. I have Kingsport and like it a lot. The board adds some neat new locations and mechanics, but aside from that, the expansion also introduces a good collection of new monsters, the guardians, a couple heralds, and some seriously vicious AOs. And of course the location/Mythos/Gate/items/etc., which can basically be tossed into your decks for the most part permanently.

Dunwich, when it comes back out, should be a good choice as virtually everyone on the forums really recommends it quite heavily (plus it introduces the Injury/Madness rules, which from everything I've heard everyone uses instead of the standard KO/insane rules now).

So wait for Pharoh and in mean time can really buy them in any order and none of them really need any of the others to make them playable.

Thanks

Sorry, it's relationship cards in Lurker, not personal stories. Personal stories are in Innsmouth.

FFG have said only CotDP needs revising and therefore no others will be revised. See the thread in the sticky section.

FWIW, Id say your purchase should depend on how well you are doing with the basic Arkham strategy of sealing the most unstable locations quickly. If you have grasped that, its time for either DH or IH. If you havent, get KH. And prepare to be overwhelmed by surge upon surge of monsters in Arkham :)

As for the little guys, definitely wait for revised Curse. Aside from that, it goes like the above. If you are doing well, get King or Goat (for the Herald). If your investigators are frequently devoured, get Lurker.
