WHFRP for dummies

By samdog, in WFRP Rules Questions

Greetings!!

I have been a fan of WHFRP since the early 90's. I played and loved 1st edition. I recently bought the 3rd edition boxed set and was blown away. I like the dice sets and cards, and I think it all looks really cool and I want to play it. The only problem I have is that I have a hard time getting a full grasp of the rules because there aren't many examples. Also the language and format makes things a little mind boggling, as it seems one has to read and understand everything entirely before moving on to the next chapter. What would be helpful for me is a table of examples or a dumbed down explanation of things.

For starters, how about some examples of how to form a dice pool for combat? Or an entire explanation of a combat step by step? Or some examples of some dice pools for other challenges. That would probably get me over the hump I am at.

Thanks!!!

The combat chapter of the rules breaks it down step by step and has a two page example of combat. In the hardcover Player's Guide it is on pages 83 - 85. I don't have the boxed set rulebook on hand, so I'm not sure what page it is there. Combat merely extrapolates the general dice pool mechanics explained earlier in the book. It took our group 2 sessions to work all the kinks out, but it's pretty simple once you play a few times.

Dicepool is very easy.

Pick an action card or skill -

Add a blue die for every point of the applicable characteristic (Agility for Ballistic skill for example). Add white dice for any spent fortune points, fortune modified attributes, specializations or other factors. Add yellow dice for trained skills, or other abilities(career abilities usually). Add challenge dice(purple) as appropriate depending on the action, misfortune dice (black) as appropriate, add any dice indicated on the selected action card in the upper left corner. Convert blue dice yo stance dice as releveant on a one in/one out basis.

Roll.

Net out success/failures, boons/banes.

Apply remaining die results as per action selected or as per GM discretion if results not indicated for action.
