Haven't played a game with familiars before, so I gotta ask: since familiars can only move their speed, and they can't run, don't they have a tendency to get left behind when characters start running? Their owner can't just carry them around, right?
Familiars get left behind?

Right.

You are correct that they can't run, however, they do have a way of keeping up with the heroes most of the time, I find. Perhaps that's in part because the heroes in our group don't run for three consecutive turns, though. Heroes who run in one turn usually end up Battling in the next (ie: they were moving into position or something.) Another part of it might be that familiars don't get hit with space traps that slow them down, and they can move through enemy figures with impunity.
Long story short, I've never had a problem with familiars falling behind. I wouldn't worry about it at your table until it proves to be a problem (IF it proves to be a problem.)
The one that we were eyeballing last game was Skye. Seems that if it has to move into an enemy's square, that generally means it not only needs to keep up with the party, it needs to get ahead of them.
We've used Skye several times and never had a problem with him keeping up. Speed 5 + Fly means he's faster than most heroes at moving around the board. Sometimes monsters come from behind, so he doesn't always have to be in the lead. His ability affects all monsters adjacent to him, not just those in his space so he can save a point of movement that way.
And last but not least, if you're in a situation where you can (and should) run for multiple turns in a row then you're probably so far ahead that you don't need your familiars.
