Swallow and Guard?

By Shatteredragon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Today when I used swallow for the first time it was against the Tank (Melee only) with a Guard action on. The attack originated from 3 spaces away and succeeded. Since the Melee user wasn't adjacent to the monster was he able to use his guard as soon as he was swallowed? I'm guessing yes since guard can be used to interupt any of the Overlords actions (obviously within the restriction limits of the stomach) which means while he couldn't attack before he was swallowed he could after? Even if it was my last attack and my turn ended as soon as the monster finished swallowing the hero? He was only able to roll one red die but since he rolled an X I wasn't worried about clarifying this.

Though I have to say, Swallow reduced Nanok down to 5 wounds from 22, I enjoyed that.

Well, when attacked, he wasn't adjacent, so no melee attacks. After the attack/swallow, the guard is lost as he has taken damage.

He could use his Guard before the Ice Wyrm attacked him, but melee attacks can only target adjacent squares, so he couldn't have used it against the Ice Wyrm that was 3 squares away. If he was adjacent to some other monster, he could have attacked it.

If he didn't use the Guard before the Ice Wyrm's attack resolved, then it sounds like he suffered wounds, and therefore would have lost the Guard order.

However, technically the Swallow ability can be used on an attack that inflicts damage , even if all of the damage was blocked by armor and no wounds were dealt. So, theoretically, it should be possible to get swallowed without losing your Guard order. And in that case, yes, I think it would be legal to use the Guard to attack from inside the stomach, even if the swallowing monster was the last one to activate during the overlord's turn. However, remember you can only use one hand's worth of weapons while inside the stomach, so unless you have a one-handed weapon already equipped, you can only make an unarmed attack.

Damnable tank had more than eneogh armor to shrug off the attack so he didn't take wounds, but yes, I was aware that when a card or ability refers to damage before armor that I don't have to apply wounds to use any additional abilities. On the other hand he's using a silver piercing axe (two handed) and it was relegated down to one red die (unarmed attack) due to being on the stomach tile.

From everything I can tell I have to agree, that the guard order (as long as no wounds were taken) probably should be able to go off, I got lucky since that monster only had 1 wound left and any hit from inside would have killed it, gotta love those X's. Sadly this means the Tank now has Ironskin since that was the Rumor dungeon they just did.

Looks like I played it out right.
