Heroes and cover

By Major Mishap, in Dust Tactics

So, why can't heroes use cover when on their own? It doesn't make sense to me, there he is hiding behined a tank trap with his Grenadier buddies when finally all his buddies are taken out, all of the sudden he's in the open! Why? Is there a rules design reason, I can't figure it out.

cause its kinda not heroic

Yeah, it does seem a little silly that a hero can, say, hide all day long behind an object that blocks line of sight entirely, but he can't duck behind an ammo crate to avoid his head getting blown off.

Of course, as it says in the Operation Cyclone campaign book, "if you don't like a rule, then change it".

Yeah, I will do, we tend to forget that they can't hide anyway. I don't duppose it would effect gameplay and at least then you do have a viable option of going it alone instead of running around with 5 bodyguards.

I would think that a hero became a hero by using cover at some point or the other. My two cents.....

I think the fact that they have 4 health points make up for the lack of cover.

But a squad has 5 health, deals out more damage and costs the same number of points.

and most squads lack a special ability that can as dramaticaly effect a game at a critical moment in such a critical way , even if its just single use abilities .

besides , "WHAT ?!?!?!?!?!?! DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER ?!?!?!?!!??!!?"

Agreed, every unit has its uses in certain situations, one of the things I like about this game, there is no super must-have beat-all unit. But this is now getting a little off topic, there still is no logical or game design reason put forward as to why heroes can't take cover when on their own. If a aquad of 6 men can hide behined a tank trap then one should be able to too. Might try to mail the designers as noone come here :(

"Choozoo: We went up and down that pile of dirt for four days and four nights. Fixed bayonettes, hand to hand. Fought 'em something fierce. They gave back as good as they got. Lots of men died. We were with the 23rd infantry. We joined the Corps later. Hell, we were even younger than you are.
Corporal 'Stitch' Jones: I never heard of no Heartbreak Ridge.
Choozoo: That's 'cause it ain't in any of the history books. Just a little piece of war. Place didn't even have a name, just a number. Stoney Jackson took one look up at it and said "Ladies, if this hill doesn't kill us it'll surely break our hearts."
Corporal 'Stitch' Jones: Who's Stoney Jackson?
Choozoo: Little Mary's husband. He was the one who recommended Highway for his Congressional Medal of Honor.
Corporal 'Stitch' Jones: Gunny Highway won the CMH?
Choozoo: He charged two machine gun nests by himself. He didn't sleep for 3 days. The final human wave he held off almost single handedly. When it was over there was me, Stoney Jackson and Tom Highway. We were the only ones left alive.
Corporal 'Stitch' Jones: What happened to Jackson?
Choozoo: He was killed in Khe Sanh in '68."

"We need you all. Service guarantees citizenship.
We must meet this threat with our courage, our valor, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilization, not insect, dominates this galaxy *now and always*!
You knew and still you sent them?
You disapprove? Well, too bad! We're in this war for the species, boys and girls. It's simple numbers. They have more. And every day I have to make decisions that send hundreds of people like you to their deaths.
Didn't they tell you, Colonel? That's what the Mobile Infantry is good for."

"Warm it up, everything you've got. C'mon you apes, you wanna live forever?"

"This is for all you new people: I only have one rule. Everyone fights. No one quits. You don't do your job, I'll shoot you myself. You get me?"

"Do you want to live forever. Hawkmen... DIIIIIIVVE!"

"This way, you'll be giving your life to save the Earth! Haven't you any spirit at all?"

"You'll assign us a new lieutenant?
I'm offering you a battlefield promotion, son.
But I'll take it, until I'm history or until you find someone better."

"When he was as old as you are now, Alexander the great was dead."

"only those that take great isks can reap great rewards "

"Warden Miller: [after giving Rico a package, which has is Badge and a picture of Hammond in it] So tell me, Rico, what is the meaning of life?
Rico: [the package converts into a gun and Rico points it at the Warden's throat] It ends.
[shoots the Warden in the throat] "

"Brisco: Judge Dredd, take cover!
Judge Dredd: They're firing 20 milimetre caseless fletcher rounds at 300 metres. The effective lethal range is 200 metres. You're safe... so what are you doing down there, Judge Hershey?
Judge Hershey: Waiting for backup.
Judge Dredd: It's here."

"Apone: All right, sweethearts, you're a team and there's nothin' to worry about. We come here, and we gonna conquer, and we gonna kick some, is that understood? That's what we gonna do, sweethearts, we are going to go and get some. All right, people, on the ready line! Are ya lean?
Marines: Yea!
Apone: Are ya mean?
Marines: Yea!
Apone: WHAT ARE YOU?
Marines: Lean and mean!
Apone: WHAT ARE YOU? HUDSON! Get on the ready line, Marines, get some today! Get on the ready line! Move it out! Move it out, goshdarnit ! Get hot! One, two, three, four! Get out, get out, get out! Move it out, move it out, move it out! Move it out, move it out, move it out! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Aaarrrrr, absolutely badapples ! Let's pack 'em in! Get in there!"

"Vasquez: LET'S ROCK!"

i think i've said enough now in support of heros not getting cover ?

well there are rules that i dissagree with to , and other rules that make no logical sense to me , but i accept them because the game as is is so wonderfuly fun , that i accept the rules i dont like , and only make my house rules to fill in untill either DT has rules to cover a situation (like my airplane rules) , or to fill gaps to make casual play custom units fit the rules that DO exist ; like my hell runner .

i look at how great this game is , and am willing to suffer a few oddities to enjoy the fun this game is straight out of the gate . after all the games i have learnt and given up like WH40K , mutant cronicles , battle tech , etc............... and all the systems i have had to labor through because of the rules in them , DUST TACTICS is the game i have been waiting over 20 years for .
