Painting my Axis walkers

By Redordead, in Dust Tactics

Now I will begin by stating very bluntly that I make ZERO claims of being a good painter.

That aside, I've been reading the winter camo tutorial on brushthralls and got a bit carried away.

The results so far, can be found here:

I take no credit for the painting techniques used therein. All kudos is due to the brushthralls team.

Looking good but whats this 'smoke wash' stuff and can it be brushed on? Does it represent general muck 'n' grime of a 'tank' ? I'm apprehensive of mucking mine up in case I literally muck it up :/

Dinnae worry yersel son! (Sorry, I was overemphasizing my Scottish accent in an effort to calm your frayed nerves Dave gui%C3%B1o.gif ).

Smoke wash is a product from Vallejo. It's in their model colour range and you can buy it from most decent model shops. You can even buy it from hobbycraft.

Get smokin' bro!!!

Sorry, I completely missed one of the main points of your question: Yes, it can be brushed on, but I would suggest using Vallejo glaze medium to thin it and ensure that it runs into the recesses of your model.

It takes longer to dry, but you get a much more even finish without the colour being diluted, like when water is used to thin washes.

Hope this helps mate,

The article for speed painting axis walkers on my blog is finished, (even though the models themselves still have details to be painted) and I'm almost completely finished the boxed set in time for my demo on Saturday.

I'll be posting pictures of the allied robots too, though these will be the finished product, rather than a blow by blow account of how they were painted. Like the Axis robots, these were painted in a single day, minus small details.
