Throwing stuff with exceptional strength?

By Beard Bear, in Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG

Is there any table for how far you can throw objects or persons. Just asking since my group has a warrior mentalist with the ability to boost his strength enough to lift 1 ton as natural weight and 3 tons as max, now he wants to throw stuff around. How can i calculate that?

Well, there doesn't seem to be anything ruling this in the main rulebook. I would suggest resolving this on the basis of physics, since throwing heavy objects with your hands is a physical act.

Consider that carrying capacity is based on the integrity of the structure bearing it - as you can see in the Weight Index on page 54.

So it stands to reason that if your carrying capacity is dependent on your overall Strength (which affects size: weight./stature), your max throwable weight should also be related to this. In order to move or throw something heavy, you have to have more inertia than it does. For example, if I was 140 lbs, and I walked up to an iron bar sticking up out of some concrete - even though I might be strong enough to bend it, I will more likely just move my own body closer to it than bend the bar. Even if I plant my feet, the friction of my shoes still won't give me enough purchase to leverage all my strength and bend that steel.

However - if I was a 8' tall 450lb giant, my own stature would anchor me enough to leverage the same strength, and bend that bar. So when it comes to throwing large objects or people, the same thing should apply.

I would use the Weight Index table to get some requirements for this. Your average person with a 5 strength can effectively throw heavy objects up to about 10% of their carrying capacity, or 13 lbs. Anything heavier than that can't be thrown over enough distance or with enough speed to be of consequence as a reliable weapon. Sure, you could dump a 30 or 40 lb load a few feet away from you, but that's not what we require for a Throwable Weapon.

With that in mind, I would think that the character throwing this weight should personally weight at *least* the average of their Natural Weight and Maximum Load (NW + ML / 2).

If I want to throw a 40 lb boulder around, then my character should qualify for 2 things:

  • 7 Strength (Max Load / 10 = 40 lbs)
  • Minimum Weight of 265 lbs (Size 13 or higher)

If I want to throw a 200 lb team mate through the air, I need these stats to qualify:

  • 12 Strength (Max Load / 10 = 224lbs) - this much strength also requires Inhuman
  • Minimum character Weight of 1505 lbs (Size over 22) **

** A 22 size would be taller than 8 feet, and ridiculously heavy. 1500 lbs is about as heavy as a large horse. So we are talking about characters who are pretty much in of the Ogre class of beings, which is conceivable for a Jayan Nephilim. Other than being a Jayan, I can't think of a natural human being who is both that large, and also athletic enough to throw human beings around like weapons. Until the Anima supplement Those Who Walked Among Us is available in English, you could also create your own large sized races (Ogre, Minotaur, etc) and play with large throwable objects.

Anyways, that is my take on this subject. I'm sure others can come up with alternate rules for this too.

There is the Impact Table for the results of throwing people around, but it was omitted from the core rules in both languages and appears in Dominus Exxet. You can see it referenced in a couple of powers in the core rules. It can also be found in the Cipher Studios forum . You roll comparitive STR. Subtract the throwee's result from the thrower's. A result of +0 or more indicates the target went no distance - you pretty much just dropped him. The result is then fed into the Impact Table on the column for the thrower's STR. This determines both how far the throwee goes and how much damage they take on impact.

(houseruling) This could be modified for throwing large, non-struggling objects. Take half the Size of the object (approximated from the Size chart) as the object's effective STR, and roll that. You might also modify which column the roll is read from - for every Size Category larger than Medium, shift one step to the left (so throwing a Large creature or object is impossible for someone with STR less than 10, and someone with STR 10 reads from the STR 6-9 column). Hope this helps.
