Gipsy overpowered?

By frogemoth, in Talisman

In our last game there was a situation that has made the Gipsy really overpowered, of course I was playing the Gipsy ;)

I had 6 craft so I can have up to 3 spells, I had none when a player used Syphon Strength on another player, after the spell has been played I took it. On my next turn I played it but someone cast Spell Call right after so I took the Spell Call knowing that the other player would play the Syphon Strength again. So when he did I took Syphon Strength again, I played it in the next turn and payed Spell Call on my own Syphon Strength. In the same turn another player found a card when everyone gained a spell and I pulled Spell Call again. So I repeated the same strategy again and I think I end up with +6 strength. It was very funny for me but not for the others ;)

I realize that this situation is special but all the other players said that she was overpowered, I personally don't think she is that good, especially in a game with no casters.

Hi

The situation you describe is very specific and still doesn't make the gypsy OP. I would more think that it's the other players fault that plays spells that they know you will be able to take. When I meet a gypsy I try and cast bait the gypsy to pickup my lesser spells until he/she is full and then play my more stronger spells.

You need to adapt to the situation, it's like drawing a really great item and then run around close to the thief, it's just stupid play.I don't know how you guys pick your char's but when we play we don't show our picks until everybody have picked their char's and picking gypsy is a real gamble because as you say you may end up facing only strenght char's with no spell cycling.

The Gypsy was just lucky.

I think that the gypsy is not a overpowered character. She is more like a boring character to me, but it depends if you have spell casters in the game.

These days we play with 2 characters out of 3 we draw, we reveal the characters once everyone has made their pick. Playing with 2 characters make the Gipsy a lot more powerful since you can almost be certain that there will be casters in the game and probably more than one.

If you are changing game rules it is very likely that you will affect game balance as well.

Gypsy benefits if there are more characters on the board. Simple.

Only if those others are mainly spellcasters/cyclers. You get Gypsy in a game with Troll, Ogre Chieftain, Amazon, Assassin, Gladiator and I would count her days numbered rather quickly. Might seem odd, killing Gypsy in a game that features no real spellcasters, but win-loss stats for us show Gypsy is one of the better characters, which means you get her, you have a bullseye on your back and people will look to PvP and kill you. Amazon is probably the best out of that groups listed for pulling it off, with her two dice selection movement and ability to re-battle in case of a stand-off/loss, plus she starts with Str 3 (vs Gypsy's Str 2).
