Noobie Questions

By Feimeister, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all,

Recently started playing Descent and we want to make sure we're playing the game correctly :)

1. Can overlord spawn more then 1 party of mobs per turn? (i've seen some posts about it but i can't find it on the official guide)

2. Can overlord traps be spammed, like 1 after another? Eg. Crushing block (-6) , push to another square spike pit (-4) , etc.

3. Is it an official rule allowing heroes to repick 1 skill after 3 are drawn? (cause i drew a 2 handed skill for one fist? makes no sense at all.)

No, he can only play one Spawn card per turn. Whatever monsters that one Spawn card gives him is what he can spawn. Furthermore, this must be done before he starts moving any monsters at all. See "Spawning Monsters," pg 12.

Yes, so long as each successive space is valid for the trap being played. For example, he couldn't "spam" two crushing blocks because the second space is by necessaity adjacent to the first and you can't play a CB adjacent to a blocking obstacle. There is no such restriction of pits, however, so CB > Pit > Pit would be fine. (Of course, this assumes the heor dodges the first pit since if he fell in he wouldn't get moved into a new space.)

Also keep in mind that pretty much all space traps require an empty space, so he can't drop a pit on top of another pit or anything silly like that.

Page 6:

" 4A. Deal Starting Skill Cards
The hero players separate the three skill decks (subterfuge,
fighting, and wizardry) and shuffle each of them
individually. Then the hero players draw their skill
cards, each player drawing the number and type of skill
cards indicated on his hero sheet. Each hero player may
then choose to trade in one (and only one) of his skill
cards for a new card from the same deck
. The hero players
do this one player at a time, starting with the first
hero and continuing clockwise."

Thanks Steve O! :)

Is there a certain limit to an overlord deck? like how many spawn cards, trap cards etc?

The base game comes with 36 Overlord cards. The Overlord deck consits of all of them. No restrictions, nothing is to be left aside. In fact nothing is allowed to be left aside.

The expansions Well of Darkness, Altar of Despair and Tomb of Ice add more Overlord cards to the deck and also give the Overlord player an opportunity to modify his deck with treachery cards (those are more powerful Overlord cards). But even with the expansions there is never any restriction referring to the number of traps, spawns, or events in the Overlord deck.

Only if you play an Advanced Campaign (you need either of the two expansions Road to Legend or Sea of Blood to do so) certain cards in the Overlord deck are to be taken out for purposes of better game balance.

The Overlord may play at most one Spawn, one Power and one Event card at the start of his turn ("the start of his turn" is any point up until he activates his first monster, so drawing cards and collecting threat happens in this stage, and the order of these three card plays can be adjusted around those things.)

Trap cards and other cards (like Aim, Dodge, etc), he may play as many as he likes, but only one per triggering event ("entering an empty space" is the triggering event for both spiked pit and crushing block, and being forcably shifted to a new space by one of these traps DOES count as a new trigger, as discussed above.) He could not, however, play a Paralyzing Gas and an Exploding Door at the same time. Only one door was opened, only one trigger for a door trap.
