Believe monsters place samples on an altar. What happens then? What is the point of the samples? Would appreciate any replies.

For one scenario, they are part of the objectives. Otherwise, if you check the Take Sample card you will see that if a monster carrying samples starts their turn at an altar, each sample token gives the Keeper +5 Threat.
