Say you run out of support tokens in the box. Is that the limit, or can you use other markers like a penny or something?

On page 30 of the rulebook under the Component Limitations it specifically addresses this question. You are limited to the tokens that come with the game. If there are not tokens available, you lose the ability to place the Support Token.
