Stationary monsters at closed locations - rule clarification

By Zomnut, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Stationary monster do not move. When a location gets closed, investigators and monsters move to the street. So... does a stationary monster move in that circumstance?

I don't think there is a clarification for this but I know this has been discussed before. I think a lot would depend on circumstance, since monsters in general get moved out into the street when a location closes so would the stationary monsters. Moving them out into the street isn't part of their movement phase and does not take their movement type into account (ie a red monster would not move 2 spaces nor a blue monster move to the sky). However if there is a gate at the location that should override the closed token as long as the gate is there.

In general only stable locations will close and monsters are either generated by gates which don't tend to appear on stable locations or mythos cards which usually dump them in the streets. The only times I can think of when this would even be possible is when using either the Naacal Key or Milk of Shub-Niggurath. In one case it opens a gate and the other it attracts all the monsters.

No investigators or monsters may be in a closed location. All investigators and monsters in a location that closes (and doesn't have a gate, as Veet pointed out) get relocated to the street.

Don't forget things like Lure Monster spell or the Mi-Go Brain Case unique item! Those can move yellow-bordered monsters to stable locations!

No need for clarification, it is in the rules already :) (Page 20)

If the terror level reaches 3, place a closed marker on the General Store. It is closed for the rest of the game and no one may enter that location. Immediately move any investigators and monsters currently at the General Store to the Rivertown street area.

Sure, you could be pedantic and argue that the rules only explicitly state what happens when the General Store, Magic and Curiosity shops close, but it's a reasonable assumption that you can apply this rule for any location closure.

Place the closed location marker and move any investigators & monsters to the street location.

On a side note, if a gate opens in a closed location then investigators can move there and monsters can come out of the gate. If the location is still closed when the gate is removed then move any monsters & investigators to the street location.

Thanks for the help, all. If the rule on page 11 was worded differently, then I would definitely agree that there would be no need for clarification:

Stationary (Yellow Border): Stationary monsters never move. They always remain at the location where they entered play. [emphasis in original]

The rule on page 20 seems to contradict the rule that yellow monsters "never move" and "always remain at the location where they entered play" but I agree that page 20 should take precedence. Very much enjoying the game, and I appreciate the helpful community here.

Take the time to read the rule book from cover to cover when you are not playing the game. That's not an insult to you, but simply the rules are all over the place and you will find that you have been doing certain things wrong.

I think it was well over a year before I was playing according to the rules. Then you get into the errata and clarifications....
