Escort Carriers

By Bandersnatch2, in Rogue Trader House Rules

Back in 2004, in the fifth issue of Warp Rift , Chris French wrote an article in which he noted the absence of carrier ships of Escort class (which, in Rogue Trader terms, would be a combination of the Raider and Frigate classes). He went on to discuss the origin and purpose of real-world escort carriers, and how that would translate in the 41st millennium. At the end of the article, he presented some suggested rules for turning Escorts armed with torpedoes (such as Cobras, Infidels, and Nightshades) into miniature carriers, by adding five points to their cost and replacing the torpedo bays with a Strength 1 launch deck. Beyond that, I won't rehash what he said in his article, its available for free online. I will, however, present the ship hull I designed for Rogue Trader, inspired by his article.

Sparrow-class Carrier-Corvette
Dimensions: 1.6 km long, 0.3 km abeam at fins approx.
Mass: 6.2 megatonnes approx.
Crew: 22,00 crew, 6,000 pilots and support personnel, approx.
Accel: 4.3 gravities max sustainable acceleration.

Loathed by every level of the Imperial Navy hierarchy, the carrier-corvette class is none the less vital to Imperial operations. One of the few ships smaller than cruisers capable of holding and deploying attack craft, these vessels excel at convoy protection, where larger cruiser-class carriers are too valuable to be spared. Carrier-corvettes can be nominally assigned to the frigate class, and are often constructed from salvaged Sword-class escorts no longer capable of supporting their robust laser batteries at full strength. Instead, carrier-corvettes have layers of armor peeled away and internal hull space opened and honeycombed into massive attack craft storage vaults, maintenance chambers, launch tubes, and landing bays. Carrier-corvettes are much cheaper and easier to produce than cruiser-sized carriers, which makes up for the fact that they are fragile ships and virtually unarmed in comparison to other frigates and raiders. Naval officers often take being assigned to a carrier-corvette as a personal insult, as it invariably means they will be assigned to protect convoys of chartist cargo-haulers and kept to the rear of any battle, serving as little more than a staging platform for their attack craft. If there is one other duty at which carrier-corvettes excel, it is at supporting planetary assaults. Their storage vaults can just as easily be filled with Aeronautica as void-borne craft, and they are small enough to operate with agility in-atmosphere or even land on a planet's surface.

The Sparrow -class is a typical carrier-corvette, a frigate stripped down of weaponry, armor, and hull bracings to make room for gargantuan attack-craft bays, which also has impact on their maneuverability. Sparrows are known for their Lathe-style hanger bays, which yawn like open maws to the void. Neighboring vessels often describe the Sparrow's appearance as vulnerable, as though she possesses no protective skin of armor at all, and they can look down into the very bones and innards of the ship. This makes many critical of the Sparrow , even more so than of other carrier-corvettes, as one solid blow to the hangers could crack the ship in half. Cooler heads remark that carrier-corvettes are never intended to be involved in direct ship-to-ship combat in any case, and the unusual hanger design allows the Sparrow to stock and deploy more attack-craft making it a more efficient carrier, which is what it was designed for after all.

There is some appeal in carrier-corvettes for Rogue Traders; few enemies expect a ship so small to suddenly erupt with waves of harassing bombers and protective fighters, and fewer still are equipped to combat such obstacles. They are extremely valuable as support ships, a pair of such corvettes can cover entire convoys with interceptors on Combat Void Patrol, and still threaten attackers with squadrons of bombers. They're also dirt-cheap, at least in comparison to other carriers, and can be easily converted from the wreckage of other frigates. Still, their fragility and lack of firepower make many of the more adventurous and bloodthirsty Traders look elsewhere for their vessels, and the ship's hangers prevent the more mercantile captains from hauling much cargo.

Speed: 8; Maneuverability: +15; Detection: +10; Hull Integrity: 30; Armor: 16; Turret Rating: 1; Space: 35;

Ship Points: 38; Weapons Capacity: 1 Dorsal.

Carrier: The Sparrow-class carrier-corvette comes equipped with one Lathe-class Landing Bay Component, which may not be removed. The hull's space has already been reduced to account for this; however, when the ship is constructed, it must be able to provide one Power to the landing bay Component. Sparrows also have the option to take a Flight Command Bridge and/or Small Craft Repair Deck at their normal Space and Power cost.

A typical Sparrow:

THE NIGHT OWL
Ship Points: 46
One of the few free-charter ships not outfitted for hauling cargo, Night Owl was converted from the hulk of a Sword-class frigate six hundred years ago to protect convoys of transports hauling valuable trade goods. Night Owl's crew is recruited from the populations of the cargo vessels it protects, which volunteer their best men to the duty as part of their payment for the corvette's protection. The charter transports also pay the crew's wages, which are typically double what they would earn on their own, due to the increased risk of serving aboard a fragile combat ship. Night Owl is legendary for its stealth tactics, shadowing trade convoys at long range, where it can keep an eye out for approaching danger, and deploy bombers from an unexpected quarter when enemy arrives.

Essential Components: Jovian Pattern Class 1 Drive, Strelov 2 Warp Engine, Gellar Field, Single Void Shield, Flight Command Bridge, Clemency Pattern Life Sustainer, Pressed-crew Quarters, M-100 Auger Array.
Supplemental Components: Mars Pattern Macrocannons (Dorsal), Lathe Pattern Landing Bay, Augmented Retro-Thrusters, Empyrean Mantle, Observation Dome, Pilot's Chamber, Small Craft Repair Deck.

nice job , and fine ship !

In Battlefleet Gothic, Escort Carriers are generally cargo vessels with launch bays (in Rogue Trader terms a Loki-class Q-ship with launch bay components) like the Memory of Brinaga from the novel Shadow Point. This class of ship, however, looks to fill that gap as well, and it sounds like a very characterful addition to the game - and it fits nicely lorewise because there are loads of Swords out there and that class is even named as the escort equivalent of the Lunar-class.

I can picture a whole pack of Chartist captains sponsering a few of these vessels, sending volunteer crew and contributing to salvage and repair damaged fighters and bombers in order to keep themselves safe - and these 'Shephard' ships can be an exceedingly nasty surprise for raiders.

Combine these with some destroyer torpedo ships and you're more or less got a WW2 style convey escort. Think around 1944 in the Phillipines a handful of US escort carriers and half a dozen or so destroyers kicked the absolute **** out of a Japanese battlegroup with a couple of battleships in it to the point that they more or less ran away. Course, they took terrible losses in the process, but they did manage to wipe out a lot of tonnage and seriously broke a lot more.

Guess the lesson from that which will come to pass in RT is that they'll probably do a lot of damage, but you probably dont want to be on one when it starts getting shot at by warships! :)

This Hull and concept also inspired by:

I.M.S. Ghost

Don't remember where I found this (I didn't build or paint it myself), but this was described as the I.M.S. Imperial Ghost, an Enforcer-class light cruiser. I suppose that since discovering it, I'd been mistaking it for an Escort-sized/classed ship.

Still, no regrets about how the Sparrow turned out.

I like the Sparrow, and I can easily see a ship of the kind being built, along with the Enforcer and the Corax classes, in 36M when a good portion of the Imperial Navy focused on attack craft for a time. I have long been a fan of the history of escort carriers and the people that served on them, and I myself have done something similar for a BFG campaign which I now have the ability to convert into Rogue Trader, the Halo class.

The only quibble I really have is that the Sparrow is technically a light carrier rather than an escort carrier. As 'escort carrier' is a designation (CVE) normally given to a carrier produced from a converted cargo vessel, 'light carrier' is the term given to a converted, or otherwise smaller than a fleet carrier, military ship (CVL).

I myself chose to call the Sparrow a "Carrier-Corvette." The title of this thread "Escort Carriers" is in referance to the Warp Rift article I mentioned in the initial post. In Battlefleet Gothic, frigates and raiders considered to be "Escorts" and had distinct rules from Capital Ships. The article revolved around creating an "Escort"-class carrier, as all carrier vessels up to that point were Capital Ships.

Ahh, that makes sense then, you meant carriesrs of an escort's size, rather than just the escort carrier class itself.

Nice stuff.... I think I am going to... "Borrow" the concept

I had a similar idea. Rather that reinvent something, I took an existing hull and went by RAW. I love the flaws that this ship has as well as the advantages. Fully equipped its SP is 35. You can't get a raider for that much and it even has a launch bay, 10 speed and +25 manoeuvrability. I've never enjoyed blah-ships that have no disadvantages to go with their advantages. I think my favorite variant of the Star Clipper is one with a Gilded Hull and all sorts of bling (yeah, thats a 9 armour ship). You have to be badass to ride around in a 9 armour ship.... or stupid. :)

Ballistae-class Transport

Hull: Transport
Class: Heavily Modified Orion-class Star Clipper transport
Dimensions: 3 km long, 0.4 km abeam at fins approx.
Mass: 8 megatonnes approx.
Crew: 12,300, approx., 2,900 pilots and support staff, approx.
Accel: 5.4 gravities max sustainable acceleration

The Ballistae-class is barely classed as a transport. Any cargo space it may once have had, has been commandeered for military purposes. Instead of a vast cargo hold, the Ballistae mounts hangar space for six fighter or bomber squadrons, depending on its mission. As the smallest and fastest combat worthy vessel to field attack craft, the Ballistae can perform many functions: A picket ship, system monitor, anti-piracy ship, blockade vessel, etc.
As a picket ship the Ballistae monitors the fringes of the fleet for would be attackers and engage with its long range weaponry and attack craft until its larger cousins can arrive to deal with the threat.
Its mission capabilities may seem impressive on paper, but it still had to sacrifice armour for its speed. Its lightly armoured even for a transport. Any Captain that believe the Ballistae can survive a stand-up fight vs anything but a raider, is either insane or foolhardy. Using the Ballistae's speed, manoeuvrability, and stand-off weapons is the best way to survive a confrontation. Many captains in the imperium consider the Ballistae an expendable resource. The crews that serve on one however, are dedicated and faithful to the god-emperor and their ship to the bitter end.

An interesting variant of the Longbow is the torpedo wielding Ballistae. It's not uncommon to find several bomber squadrons launching from the Ballistae loaded with torpedoes while the Ballistae manoeuvers to fire its own.

Like the topedo boat, was thinking of making something similar of a Star Clipper I have in my fleet.

Here's a little system ship I thought would fit the theme :)

Lux Class Patrol Torpedo Boat
These tiny little ships are confined to systems and usually carry out their duties in small squadrons as interdiction, customs duties, escort and assault. There is nothing particularly fancy about them, but they are extremely cheap, idiots can fix them an only require 3000 crew. Of whom tend to hate being on the ship for more than a couple of months at a time because its cramped, cold and usually smells like a latrine after a while, the ship only carries three months of supplies.

In a protracted fight they usually suffer terribly due to the lack of integrity in the construction, however if they do manage to get the jump on much larger ships the torpedos are proven ship killers and speed off before the enemy can range them down. For their size, they do carry remarkably decent armour, good sensors and large amounts of point defence guns which makes them invaluable for running cover, escort duties against enemy bombers and torpedos.
