[RTL] Overlord: 161 CTs, Heroes: 71 CTs - can the Heroes turn it around?

By dlaw2, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Our first RTL campaign has entered the Silver level during the Caverns of Thuul dungeon.

As you can see the Heroes are quite behind on conquest (and getting a little frustrated that the game seems to be going in favour of the Overlord).

Is it too difficult for them to turn this around?

Hero party:

Nanok of the Blade
Cautious
+2 Black Melee dice
Dragontooth Hammer

Mad Cathos
Inner Fire, Tough
Staff of Punishment, Heavy Leather Armour, Mana Weave

Lord Hawthorne
Mighty
2 Silver Melee Upgrade
Bone Blade, Crystal Shield Plate Mail

Tetherys
Rapid Fire, Master Archer
1 Silver Ranged Upgrade
Magic Bow, Chain Mail

The Overlord has Into My Parlour, Silver Beasts , Focussed, Siege Engines, 2 Trap Treachery and the whole Farrow family. He is going for the Ascension plot.

Frostgate has been razed and Riverwatch and Greyhaven are close to being razed.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

I'm the perpetual optimist in RtL, so I think they can turn it around especially once they get a few Silver treasures. If I were them, I'd start hunting those Lts down and killing them.

The Heroes have tried to take on Sir Alric and Lady Eliza but found the Silver Beast minions too much, especially once a couple of the party die early on in the encounter. The ability for the Overlord to reinforce whilst the Heroes cannot return has made it difficult for them. Maybe Silver treasures will change that.

The Overlord is The Spider Queen, by the way.

Silver Treasures will do a lot.

Methinks they should try to save Riverwatch, especially because they get to buy treasure and may still attack a Lieutenant, if I am not mistaken, all geared up with shiny stuff. A silver weapon is all it takes to blast some minions into oblivion, like, ice storm, which handily ignores Soar, and rolls WGG.

Also, Riverwatch is harder to reach, for the spider queen, thus once you chase the Lt from it, it is harder for him to return.

I'm with Xandria. All is not lost. I think Riverwatch is a bit more more valuable that Greyhaven. Which LT is where? How far away are the towns from having to roll? Get to Riverwatch for the market and load up on power potions. Then try to oust the LT.

Good luck..... never give up.. never surrender!

If I remember correctly, Sir Alric is at Greyhaven and Merrick is at Riverwatch. Lady Eliza is somewhere near Tamalir I think.

Greyhaven rolled for a raze at the start of the latest week (and failed) and I think Riverwatch may be rolling either at the start of next week or the week after. It doesn't seem like it would be easy to get from Caverns of Thuul to Riverwatch too quickly though (Heroes are entering Level 4 next session).

It looks like you play the game a bit incorrect. First of all LT can't move while you in dangeon. Week ends only when you end dangeon. Before that OL can't do anyting on global map. While you in dangeon time doesn't move on global map. Then you can jump to Tamalir directly.

No, we are playing that correctly. It's still two trails from Tamalir to Riverwatch though which will be 1-2 chances to raze Greyhaven and Riverwatch by the time the Heroes get there (with the Siege Engines the defence is lowered to 2 and there is already 1 or 2 siege tokens there).

The Heroes have already tried to take on Sir Alric and Lady Eliza and fled both times. Is Lord Merrick Farrow going to be easier?

Merrick is the weakest of the family if Beasts are the upgrade.

Lady Eliza has lots (all?) beasts and can pretty much hide and use her super command. Upgrade the Naga to Master using her Brilliant Commander for more command (and Master Nagas are relatively tough).

Alric has a mixture of creatures IIRC but is personally tougher and more likely to 'get away' if things don;t go well for the OL.

Merric is just pathetic, relatively. He has blast as his 'thing' IIRC, which isn't a great deal of use if there are a bunch of trees on the map. His support cast is the weakest for Beasts as well I think...

Dude, you can TP to Tamalir after you finish the Caverns. Also, whose salubrious idea was it to go into the caverns of Thuul with upgraded beasts? Fighting three silver dragons? No, thanks.

So. Either finish the legendary, if you feel cocky, or run, and TP back to Tamalir, shop. Then, hop to Riverwatch, shop, kick Merrick's arse (the sole problem is his manticore), proceed to pwn it heartily, and you're A-OK. If you happen to be lucky, and have the Stick of the Wilds and Greyhaven is not razed once more, then make two steps, shop, and proceed to clean house there. While Alric is naughty, his sole strength are his toughness and the Razorwings. Watch for those, and you should be fine. To beat Alric personally, consider quaffing power pots before the battle (yes, they stay active until you use them or you die). Then, advance your tanks to Alric, and guard. When he activates, and his regeneration triggers (healing 0 hp) you trigger guard attacks, whereupon he has to run or take battle actions with power pots next turn.

Thanks for the advice. Any particular upgrades you think the Heroes should be looking to pick up? They have some XP ready to spend.
