Movement point cost

By pdn12421, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

My heroes and I always have a discussion how many movement points it cost to jump over a pit.

I say 4 (three for the pit and additional one to land on other side) and they say 3 from the text in manual. Am I wrong?

If I'm wrong does that mean that crossing one space mud is equal to jumping over it?

Your players are right. The rule book says 3 and here's (what I think) is the reason why.

So you voluntarily climb into a pit for some reason. That costs you 1 movement point to do so. It then costs you 2 movement points to climb out to stand in a space adjacent to the pit. However, in the process you will have taken 1 wound. So that's 3 movement points and 1 wound crossing that pit.

Now if you delcare you are jumping over the pit, you spend 3 movement points (the same amount as if you didn't jump) but you don't take the wound.

Yes, crossing one mud space is the same as jumping over it. It costs 2 MP to move into the mud space and 1 to go from a mud space to a non-mud space. So 3 MP, same as if you jumped over it.

p 17 states "If a hero or monster is aware of the pit, it may jump across the pit for 3 movement points for each space crossed. Simply place the figure directly on the other side of the pit after spending the movement points."

So, 3 movement points are used and the figure is on the other side automatically. No 4th movement point spent.
