Financial Considerations for Chapter 2 of Tattered Fate

By JackOfShadows, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hi Folks,

I've recently started running the Haarlock Legacy for my gaming group and they are about to move into the second chapter of Tattered Fate. Does anyone who's run this adventure have any suggestions on what amount of funds I should allow the group to acquire? I don't really have a sense of what the costs are and I don't want to starve them but I also don't want them going monty haul either. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

JoS.

Hi Jack of Shadows,

!SPOILERS FOR TATTERED FATES!

to answer the question, one needs to consider the actual possesions of your pc-possie first. What gear where they able to leave the Red Cages with?

And how do they intend to make money know? In order to make the hook from Papa Grist attraktive (after all, it is one of the bottle necks the adventure wants the pc to move through to get to the next step), they should not be able to make more then he will offer them. Which will be 1000 thrones each, a rather royal sum me guesses.

So, I would say that with one of his arena matches, they will be able to make up to 100 thrones; maximum.

Hi JoS,

I can just tell you how I did it as I ran it recently (actually we ended our last session with the bginning of the 13th hour). My players left the Red Cages with, the best quality Dagger from the Heron Mask, a single Huntig Rifle, a few Mercy Killer, a Stub Revolver, two Pump Shotguns, a poor quality Chain Axe, a Meat Hook, a Cleaver, a Falchion, a Trident, a Buckler and a Render as well as the Medicae and Optical Mechadendrites from the groups Tech Priest that were partially used by a Flenser Heretek to cut up Inquisitor Karkalla (from then on they couted as Poor Quality until the right maintenance rituals in a Machine Temple are performed).

During their stay on the surface of Quaddis (i.e. Chapter 2) the groups Guardsman acquired a Chain Sword through a duel with the bodyguard of a young noble in the Fate's Wheel and the groups Assassin furthermore picked a few pockets to get hold of about 100-200 Thrones. The group made a few more Thrones by letting the Gurdsman fight a few arena fights in the Fate's Wheel with the following prizes and odds for betting for the respective opponents.

Prize Odds Opponent
3000 1:30 Carnosaurus
1000 1:10 War Beast
500 1:5 Cyber-Gladiator
300 1:3 Ripsaw Scuttler
200 1:2 Sabrewolf
100 1:1 Spindlemaw

The Guardsman fought a Spindlemaw, a Sabrewolf and a Ripsaw Scuttler (and almost also a Cyber-Gladiator) and the others bet on it so they multiplied the initially stolen money.

Finally at the end of the chapter Lady Melua was killed before their eyes by an invincible Widower in the streets of Xicarph and they took almost 1000 Thrones from her dead body.

Equipment like wepaons was available as mentioned in the book. Lodgings cost 1 Throne a night for some shanty in the Collapsed Palaces, 10 Thrones a night for a chamber above the fighting halls of the Fate's Wheel and 100 Thrones a night for a smallish villa in the Gilden Houses. My PCs slept like two nights in a rented chamber above the Fate'S Wheel and the last night before the Revel of Darkness in a rented villa near the Refutation.

My PCs lost a lot of their purchased weapons after killing Papa Grist, as they had to leave rather fast afterwards and had left their weapons (except pistoly and melee weapons) at the entrance beforehand.

So, they started Chapter three with rather mediocre equipment...

Thanks Folks,

This helps a lot. Very much appreciated.

It really depends a lot on what kind of opposition you are going to put them up against, and what rank they are.

I'm about to head into Tattered Fates, and rather then do the whole kidnapping bit, I'm going to have them use a Rogue Trader connection to smuggle them onto Quaddis via the Beast House...as beast fodder since they will want to stay incognito, but the players can't be choosy since they are under a time crunch.

Still, as they are rank 6 Acolytes I will most likely be a lot more generous then the guidelines in the TF put down. Of course the enemies in all chapters of the adventure are also being adjusted accordingly. I will probably also extend Chapter 2 a bit, since the ongoing conflict between the players and the Logicians is also going to have a serious impact in addition to the standard TF plotline.

In the end though, getting into Gabriel Chase with anything more then sidearms is going to be tough for them, so that's worth taking into consideration as well. With the extremely high quality options available, I don't see a problem with the players getting whatever they wish...provided they can acquire the thrones. That will most likely involve betting, just as in Luthor's game, but rigging the fights (they are fairly high level after all...) or participating in them are definitely options.

An additional option that I am considering...is having the players possibly stumbling across an armory inside Gabriel Chase, or perhaps getting a hint about it from the Spider Bride. That way the guys specializing in the heavier hardware aren't going to be too left out. That will make for a hell of a party at the 13th hour though with a LOT of collateral damage and casualties...
