Trucks?

By Grand Stone, in Tide of Iron

I dont have a big problem with trucks, but I think some more fun could be added. Make them do what trucks where suppose to do: carry stash!

As of now, once they have brought the men to the front, they are kind of worthless, except as vehicles that can be used for spotting for mortars/artellery, taking comand point, victory tokens etc. But I feel that there are several other fun rules which can be introduced in connection with trucks.

1 Ide: transport ammunation: For example, a hex could be determinded as the ammo-dump or something. Once a truck enters that ammunation dump, you recieve X command points. To recieve more command point, you have to move your trucks to design edge of the map (road hex maybe?) and return. Combined with an 'out of ammo' scenario could be fun. For example you could force one side to pay one command for every infanteri that fires, have them start with a limited command and the only methode of getting more command could be by securing a load of ammo from a truck?

2nd Ide: create a dex called SUPPORT II. Which works preaty much as the current version, except that a truck needs to drive to your men for it to be affective. One card can for example be to place a spesilization token below a truck which have droven of the edge of the map. The truck can then reapear on the map, and the token can be dumped anywhere, and can be picked up by any one of your squads.

3rd: Halftrucks and trucks should be able to transport AT guns along roads! But maybe only along roads. In combat situations, AT guns should obviusly not be as mobile as a tank, and thus limiting to only along roads only makes sence.

These are three idees to make trucks act as trucks.

I also think you need to use your imagination when making scenarios when using trucks. For example im making a desert scenario (I have named it stranded panzers) where on one side of the board are saome PZ III's that are out of feul and broken down. On another side a german convoy of trucks has to make it to the panzers (for each truck that makes it remove it from the board and a panzer is put back into action. This is only one part of the scenario as the main objective is to capture and move through a british outpost. So the more trucks you lose to the british the harder to complet the objectives. (althrough it is not impossible if you are only left with squads, just alot harder)

Im still playtesting it and making little adjustments, but iv made it so that there are critical decision to be made by both sides. so this is a scenario that needs to be played a number of times to explore other possiblities.

(just wish we had an editor so that I can post it up on here when im done)

There could be some rules about supply added to TOI using trucks. Maybe have some number assigned to a truck as to how many units it can supply like 10 units/truck. Then have some number of hexes from the truck that units would have to be in so they are in supply. Units out of supply (except foot infantry) would have their movement halved, and maybe firepower reductions also. Enemy trucks could get captured, and added to the capturing players total amount of supply. If all your trucks get destroyed, then all your units are out of supply.

There could also be some HQ rule, where an HQ truck increases the range of supply of all regular trucks, and also could be linked to the number of actions per turn. So if an HQ truck got destroyed, supply range would be decreased, and maybe no combined fire would be allowed, or you lose one action per turn.

Aussie_Digger that sounds like a very different scenario. Have you looked at vassal although it's not an editor i believe you can make scenarios on it hopefully somebody else with a better idea can tell you for sure.

thanks Bill will download and have a look.

Another option I was thinking about was scanning all the boards and counters and using photo shop (though I dont really now how to use it yet)

well i downloaded it but i can only get the base game part up and running all the other files say that vassal dosnt support them when i try to open them in vassal

ok iv worked it out now have it all loaded up

yes. I enjoy the basic idé for a scenario also

Alternate uses of the trucks should be scenario spesific. There do excist a few scenarios where you are given victory points for exiting trucks, but there are so many more ways to make the truck behave more like a truck. A few well made op-cards could be fine.
