Targarayen Summer/Dothraki build

By HoyaLawya, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

I've recently ordered the core set from my local store and am looking at ideas for a deck I might want to build. Below is a Targareyn deck I built using Summer for helping draw cards and Dothraki for military and power challenges plus some good synergies allowing me to stand them again. What are everyone's thoughts on this deck for a newbie? I do realize that there's 1 too many plot cards. Which do you recommend I remove from the deck? I can't figure out if I should keep Mad King's Legacy or Power and Wealth.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd dump the Power and Wealth.

I think there are too many copies of Rakharo and Drogo. I'd probably go with 2x of each.

Not enough resources. As a general rule, I try to have around ten cards that either provide gold or reduce the cost of things.

I think you have too many attachments in there. Granted, Targ is the attachment house, but with recursion, double digit attachments aren't really needed. It will clog up your hand and hurt your setups. I'd try to get it to the six to eight range.

That's all I have for now. Maybe more later.

Agreed, you don't want 2 copies of Rakharo, I'd also take out the dupe of Daeny and Gilly... too many dupes and your Bitter Crones hurt you as much as they do an opponent. I actually run 1 copy of each Khal Drogo in my Dothraki deck, bouncing the one in and out of play until I can draw the DotN copy, then playing the core version on him as a dupe when appropriate. I'd also take out some attachments in favor of more characters and locations. Blood of the Dragon is expensive, I would take out both, remove the Aegon's Blades and 1 Aggo's Bow and use Lady Daenerys's Chambers for recursion instead of so many attachments. Rhaenys's Hill would be a good addition too.
I'm not sure which CPs you plan on getting, the plots can be tweaked some, get Fury instead of The Raven's Song, and I would use Retaliation! instead of any one of the core plots you are using.
I would also say Blood Crazed Screamers and Refugees are auto-includes in any Dothraki deck.

Now that I have more time I'll add some additional comments and clarify my original post a bit, hopefully it will help you.

If you are just starting to buy CPs, you should think about getting Refugees of War and Ancient Enemies asap - this will give you the Fury plots and the Refugees for all 6 houses - all great cards (and the Targ Refugee is also a Dothraki character if you hadn't noticed that yet).

I would suggest only using 1x of both Aggo and Rakharo. They are ok, but I really think you only want dupes of a few important characters in any deck; in this deck that would definitely be Jhogo, as he is a lot more powerful than either of them. They can all be pulled out of your dead pile with To Be a Dragon, so you can get any of them back if you need to. I'm also not a big fan of the Destitute Horde since Reinforcement events are not played very often and you aren't using them yourself; it would probably be better to add another Drogo's Horde since their cost goes down very quickly when you have Refugees and Handmaidens available for cheap. It's nice to be able to put out 3-4 weenie Dothraki characters in setup and first round marshalling and then also slap down a Horde at greatly reduced cost, leaving your opponent with the option of Valaring your rather unimportant non-uniques or letting your army grow out of control while you hit him with multiple military challenges every round.
I'd also highly recommend adding some Carrion Birds - cheap stealthy characters that help you control the seasons and draw cards off of Sam, who probably isn't worth running 2x when you only have 2 raven cards in the deck.
Btw, is it a melee or a joust deck?

i myself run a Dothraki Summer deck but only for melee, i think it takes too long to get going for joust, i agree with everything Skowza said, also Dragon thief is a staple in any Targ deck because of its ambush and attachment control.

Locations is where i think you really need to switch some things up. I would play 3x Summer Sea, 3x Temple of the graces, 3 x Eastern fiefdoms, also i never found Womb of the world that useful ive put it into a few decks but i always regret it. Surprisingly i have found that Make an Example and Wars are won with Quills really help my Dothraki deck, Make an Example because i usually have 8 if im attacking with jhogo and drogos horde and Wars are won with quills because it will help you get a cheap unoppossed intrigue challeneges that you dont have to commit anything but a handmaiden to

Thanks to everyone for their input. This is a melee deck. I decided to cut out the Summer aspect using Jhogo for draw and go straight Dothraki. many of the comments have been taken into account for this new build. To keep my costs down as I'm new the game having just ordered the core set from my local game store, the build is just cards in the core set and Brotherhood without Banners cycle. Dothraki Handmaiden is the only card from DB expansion, so I skip that chapter pack and run Refugees of the Plains from RoW instead?

One other question, should I keep The Womb of the World or drop it for an extra Eastern Fiefdoms?

Thanks again.

I believe the Prince that was Promised plot is in the Brotherhood cycle which is a great plot for a dothraki deck you could even through in a couple bones of the child if your worried about 1 attachment not being enough to trigger it

I liked your Summer build better. I would take out Mutual Cause in favor of Condemned by the Realm and play that as your first plot; Building Season will probably help your opponents more than you much of the time, but it's hard to say - what location would you be searching for? Good call taking out the Mad King's legacy imo... you don't want to be discarding your own attachments with it if you have a lot of them. And I think you definitely want to get rid of the 2x Captain Groleo.
Here's a deck I've been working on just so you have something for comparison; you may not have access to some of these cards.

It’s a really basic melee deck, beginners and friends that we play with somewhat infrequently can pick it up and use it pretty easily. It doesn't have many moving parts, and no burn at all. Most of the plots generate decent gold, Summer provides a slight gold boost and draw with Gilly, Sam, and the agenda. Since almost all Dothraki effects trigger off winning a MIL challenge, you definitely have to be able to push them through, and Dragon Sight really helps with this. The deck is a bit light on discount-type locations; it started out with only 10 locations and tons of cheap characters before I cut it down a bit. No Red Warlocks, they were bad for the cost curve, no Valar in my plots since it is a military deck. No attachment recursion either.
