Typos in Black Sepulchre

By The Glen, in Dark Heresy

Was reading the module today, noticed all the modifiers are always positive. It reads make a Hard (+30) test several times, the penalty is reversed.

Typos in a FFG book? Never. LOL.

How is the adventure? Any crunch for game mechanics? Stats?

It's well paced, I'll give it that. The GM reads the intro and people are shooting at you page 1. You scout around early, find the clue to the rest of the adventure then it's a haunted house crawl mid-third, and lastly it's a race for time to blow up the big bad. It's got something for everybody and it scales to the level of the party. It leaves on a hell of a cliffhanger at the end for part 2, so you have to make your players wait after a crowning moment of awesome. Probably the best adventure for 40k based games yet in terms of nobody gets left out. Adepts can talk a bad guy to death, lots of stuff to kill, psykers and tech-priests get to play around with all sorts of stuff.

Is there a steady and very sad increase in the sloppiness of FFG books? It seems the newer releases have far more typos and errors than the earlier ones.

A worrying trend. How hard can it be to do a thorough proofread?

Besides the GODDAMNAVOIDABLETYPOS (which I have no patience for since they want a nice sum of money for their products), this sounds like it would in fact be better then the other recent DH products.

Is there any Gazeteer in it? If so, could it be used as a ground for further adventures (to keep the pc busy while waiting for the next fix)?.

I really loved the Gazeteer from "DamnedCities", imho it was their best Gazeteer so far.

The entire module is set on Scintilla and Barsapine. Scintilla they've already down of course, Barsapine they give a blurb but mention heavily it's a back water world with no major interest to the Imperium. They have some background on the planet but you really don't interact with anybody except a brief intro when you arrive. Most of the time is spent in the haunted house setting.

What rank is the adventure designed for? I am guessing they have put in their speil about it catering for all ranks but usually there is a specific rank that is the 'sweet spot'.

there are three levels, basically more dangerous mooks and harder tests. upgrades at level five and then ascended. lot of ways to go insane or corrupt though, at any level.

I got this over the weekend. I think it's an excellent adventure, far more "cinematic" than the previous Haarlock trilogy. Yes there are typos, but they didn't put me off it! It's pacy and ambitious. It says it's not linear, but to some extent it is a bit...I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, however.

I prefer Lure of the Expanse for Rogue Trader, which I still think is the best published adventure for any 40k system so far, but this is a close second, closely followed by Frozen Reaches, the other RT adventure.

I got it last week and am extremely disappointed after reading about half of it. Normally I even somehow like the not so good adventures at first (perhaps due to falling into euphoria for a new release) and tend to see loopholes and weaknesses only after contemplating a little about it and reading it a second time. And even these 'weaker' adventures can be pimped up normally by adding extra stuff and extrapolating the NPCs.

In the beginning (i.e. first chapter) BS is extremely linear and players are sort of forced to take the "right way" (i.e. railroading) irrespective of any former decisions. The overall story arc is weak as well and it even lacks a real briefing/introduction by a generic Inquisitor. The second chapter tends to begin also rather linear and then becomes some sort of Dungeon where you have to collect three pieces of a "key" by walking from room to room and fight monster/opponent x and y. Even Shades of Twilight sounded more interesting than this one. I am really disappointed by this supplement so far. sad.gif

I actually quite like the adventure. It's got a good mix, from a fighting start to a spooky haunted house middle and an epic finale.

My main concern is with the writing of the plot. I struggled to follow what was going on and I don't see how my players could really work it out during play. They can go along for the ride, but I'm expecting them to ask "what was that about?" at the end. And I'm not sure I'll be able to tell them.

Well I'll start running it this week, so we'll see. Hopefully will go well.

I thought it was quite good when I read it. However they never quite seem to be sure of the scale of the... cathedral. Some descriptors suggest it is really large and impressive, then some others suggest it is actually not that big. The smaller size seems more accurate and is the one the map suggests (and fits with established lore better), even if it gets the shape wrong, but they keep going on in the text about how imposing the thing is.

Hey guys,

I've just finished reading through the adventure and have to say I thought it was the worst one I've read. The whole thing has plot holes in it you could drive a Baneblade through. And back. And through again.

I did think if you ignore the glaring fact that somehow someone managed to lose something that fluff wise is the epitomy of the Adeptus Mechanus portrayal of the God Emperors wrath.... well, if you ignored that it's a great settup for a RT campaign. Let the players find the trade warrant and then the AM give them a ship for what they did... voila.

Two questions:

1. What does it say about scaling it for Ascension-level play?
2. Please spoil the ending for me (my copy's not yet arrived) - what is the cliff-hanger?

Thanks! gran_risa.gif

1. It just adds extra bad guys, gives them better weapons and equipment and makes tests much harder. A few it doesn't scale, but that's to give the PCs mooks to toss around.

2. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

The cathedral you are in is actually and Imperator Titan, and they get to activate it and fight a greater daemon with it.

WARNING! A MILLENIUM SPOILER LIES AHEAD"! FOR SAKE OF YOU OWN, PLAYERS, DO NOT PROCEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can a group of acolythes actually activate and pilot such a thing? I thought that the Tech-Priests of Mars have special-plugged warrior-castes for such a thing............dear godhead, that´s.... know, I refuse to believe this!

SPOILER AS WELL

Not only that, they also load and fire the Quake Cannon at the Daemon hovering in front of the cockpit...

The whole adventure feels more like a Deathwatch scenario (if at all).

Did I mentioned that during the whole adventure the PCs do not have the possibilty to interact with any living person let alone decide on their own how to proceed? Meh...

The titan thing is pretty wow...over the top and a fun ride...in theory. If its done right, it can definitely be one of those "wow did not see that coming but coooooool moments". It can also really easily flop...especially with players who have even a small amount of setting knowledge...

The rest of it sounds pretty disappointing =(. Oh well, I'll still end up buying it probably but that's a real shame.

SPOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEERS

Well the Titan thing is not the cliffhanger. Finding out that Arch-Cardinal Ignatus has given up on the Calixis Sector, wants to purge it in fire and restock it with new flock, and has summoned a Daemon Prince to cover up this plan of his, is.

They don't actually pilot the thing, it takes them there itself, they just get the generator going. The gun is also already loaded, so all they really do is press the firing button. Nothing outside the abilities of any 8 year old.

The scale thing still irritates me though. Some of the descriptions suggest a huge structure, but in truth the bit that is showing would not be that big (most of the thing is hidden underground). Maybe 20 metres tall and not much wider. The map is closer to this than a grand cathederal (but probably just slightly too large, and certainly just the wrong shape).

It does state in the module several times the machine spirits have the titan in a state of standby waiting to finish its last orders. When the acolytes finally turn the thing back on, it's on autopilot the entire time. You literally have to hang on for the ride.

Well, that's fair enough then. I could see that happening without too much trouble.

The bit about Ignato is...actually a bigger shock to me. It does hint at a few things in Blood of Martyrs where it talks about the proscribed works he has access to (including a precurser work for the Hereticus Tenebrae) which could theoretically make him a truly terrifying villain if he was ever corrupted by it...

Sounds a bit like the good Cardinal might have fallen to the Great Deceiver...

I was planning on picking this up anyway, but now I'm a little less cautious about doing so. Seems like there might be some nice stuff in it, after all.

The typos thing really bugs me though...its pretty much the only thing that pulls down FFG's production standard. Its such a shame too since the rest of the products are generally high quality, but such obvious and eye-catching errors do a lot to undermine that.

OMG! AD&D in space?

Although I'm going to GM it anyways, those to have read it: is it really railroaded in this manner?

It's not that bad, they don't talk to any living people. Living impaired people they get to talk to alot. It's a haunted house mission, there are ghosts galore in the place and you have to figure out what happened in the place.
