New player: possible to catch up?

By Nematode, in Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

When I first saw Warhammer Invasion, I mistook it for a CCG rather than a LCG. At that time, I did not know the difference between the two and dismissed it out of hand as a CCG money pit. Now that I have a pretty good idea of what a LCG is, I'm interrested in starting to play Warhammer Invasion. So, I have a couple questions about what it would take for a new player to "catch up" and be competative in the game:

1) Are all the expansions still available for purchase? I saw on the catalog page that all the expansions listed appear to be available, but I do not know if these are all the expansions that have ever been printed. I'm a completionist, and I usually don't buy a game if I can't get all the expansions.

2) Do the older expansions still have relavent cards, or has 'power creep' caused the older cards to become mostly trumped by new cards?

3) Is it necessary or recommended to buy multiple copies of the older expansions to get a usable number of the 'good' cards?

1) Generally yes, if not from FFG directly then ebay, miniaturemarket, ccgarmory, etc.

2) There is some power creep but not that much. they are only on the 3rd cycle of chapter packs so there is only around~500 cards in the card pool.

3) The only expansions which don't give you a playset are Core, Assault on Ulthuan and the first cycle of chapter packs. Personally I might buy a 2nd core/ulthuan and only buy multiple of the first cycle if you need a specific card.

Each of the battlepack cycles is tuned in a different direction eg. faction rivalries or the new development(a game mechanic)-focused cycled. So if you're trying to make a particular style of deck that isn't the most recent competitive one for that race, you will need all of the packs.

Or you can just buy all my stuff since I'm getting out of the game.

I've bought additional copies of two packs - Warpstone Chronicles being most useful for 7 artifacts (one for each faction + skaven). But I feel like catching up is hard to do even for people who were there from the start :P

Warhammer:Invasion feels like it favourises one faction (or one side) at a time per cycle, but the future looks a little brighter. We'll see when Legends is out. I think that might be a good early purchase for new players, along with Ulthuan, then concentrate on the completed cycles one at a time. March of the Damned added a bit of fun stuff with necromancy, a few utility cards for all, and all in threes. But I am not feeling the lizardman love quite yet. They seem to have some nice synergy with high-elves, though.

You will want at least two core sets, maybe even three. The skavenblight cycle has many good cards, most of them you do not really need three of or they come with three (Clan Moulder Elite is worth getting multiples of).

Really even if you buy enough of all the cards to get three of every possible card it is only about the same price as a warhammer fantasy army and far less than many ccg decks.

No. This option. Really! All of the Enemy Cycle and March of the Damned.

How much? I have a need for such things!

I'd be interested if you don't have any takers yet, qwerty. Can't see a PM system, but hopefully I'm just missing it.

It really is quite easy to catch up with any of the LCG's as the packs are all fixed. In a little under a year I caught up on 3 expansion cycles plus big boxes for Game of Thrones and owned them all. Miniaturemarket.com is great place to get packs that your store might not have anymore.

There isn't a PM system on this that I know of, but if you use deckbox.org (and you should for the database) my user name is the same and messages can be sent. Also, I'm in the U.S. and can ship to the U.S.

It's certainly possible now with the restricted list. Multiple decks are easier to maintain due to certain key cards being on the restricted list.

Like the others I still recommend at least two core sets and the ulthwe (high elf vs dark elf) starter. For that matter all the larger expansion boxes are worth a single purchase as they have all added cards that are still good and in many cases waiting to get much better as more battle packs get released.

Other than that take your time and use the online resources to hunt down effects that you want from certain battle packs and grab those items first.

Cool, emailed you through deckbox.
