board with the board

I was really thinking of getting this game. The rules sounded strong enough to get me a good miniatures experience (and they were getting better because the campaign expansions were adding more to the game). But while looking up pictures on boardgamegeek the board and terrain tiles (the squares that block line of site) really bothered me. The game has these amazing looking miniatures and the board and it's overlays and terrain are really blah. It totally takes away from the look of the game.

Has anyone who played this game had the same feeling? and if you did, did you really notice it while playing the game? or is the game fun and in-depth enough to distract from the boring board and terrain tiles?

Personally, i think the tiles are fantastic compared to what most mini games are played on (ie. plain tabletop). They are even better after operation cyclone (submarine tiles are awesome). They are easily used with 3d terrain to take away some of the 2d feel, but i have zero complaints with the tiles.

tiles are ok. real Gs hobby up some 3D terrain...

i went way beyond on making my own terrain , and still am , but even with all the 3d terrain and stuff i have down , we still use the basic tiles and bits about 30% of the time when we want to just get in there and have some good bloody fun .

its nice to just throw up a quick board , and get a blastin !

DUST IS WAR !!!!!!

I made some of the 3D terrain available for DL over at BGG and it makes everything 100x better, but even the stuff in the box is decent enough to get started with.

Storm nice 3D terrain my game store printed them out and we used them at the tournament. They were pretty easy and simple addition to the environment.

TheKingofBlades I also am making tutorials on how to make terrain on my blog. Last Wednesday I showed how to make a Russian drop pod out of a energy drink so its all on you to make the terrain but it can be made out of simple stuff.

im just mounting most of my wargame terrain on 4x4 tiles and it looks good and works well. jeez ill have to put up some pics of it along with my UK allies when im on vaccation in april...

Being a wargamer and not a board gamer, the componants are inadequate for me. The printable barriers from BGG are brilliant but do not feel right for 'outside' as I couldn't help thinking why there are random pillars of concrete scattered over the area - doesn't make any sense (not that giant walking tanks do either :) ). I'll be making specific outdoor terrain to use when not fighting within a bunker.

My current thoughts are to have impassible terrain to replace the lumps of concrete. Dense, rough area of pine trees and rocks, jagged rocks and areas of a few pine trees to replace random ammo boxes for light cover. I've also got idea's for frozen water using clear perspex, pain the underside, use a dremmel to add cracks and paint them and then add a scattering of snow flocking.
