"Forgotten Lore" ?!?

By Hellfury, in CoC General Discussion

I noticed something in the latest news article for CoC:

www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp

The former "Madness and Horror" cycle which comprised of At the Mountains of Madness and Ancient Horrors asylum packs has now been renamed to "Forgotten Lore"

What could this mean? Is it just a simple name change, or something more complex in its implications?

You dare ask this? Some knowledge is better left outside the realm of human consciousness. As those wise walkers of the outer worlds have penned:

"...do not calle up That which you cannot put downe; either from dead saltes or out of ye Spheres beyond."

Interesting. I thought "Forgotten Lore" was their code name for re-prints in general. But who knows?

Great... now I'm filled with false hope.

Yeah, I could very well be reading far more into it than I should.

But last October at the Arkham Night event, James Hata revealed that the Summons of the Deep was not only going to be reprinted but it also was going to be upgraded to the new 3X collation.

When I asked about Madness and Horror, he only said "We have something different in mind for those. I can't say more than that."

If he hadn't remarked on "doing something different" for Madness and Horror, I would have simply wrote off Forgotten Lore as just a new and improved name for the stand alone asylum packs. But I have very strong doubts that its just a simple renaming convention.

I mean, why bother renaming the "Madness and Horror" cycle since it fits so well with the names of the two asylum packs if you are not going to do more with it?

Logically, it would imply that there is something more complex than just a simple name change.

Add the cryptic last sentence of the news announcement of their reprint:

"And... be sure to keep an eye out for more Call of Cthulhu reprints, coming soon!"

...which could very well mean that updated reprints for the Dreamlands cycle is soon on the horizon, but it could mean more than that. My suspicion is that it does.

Perhaps filling in the 4 other slots with reprints from the CCG that could fit into the LCG? Perhaps even the CCG era asylum packs once some of the cards have been toned down?

Who knows? But I do love a good mystery to investigate and it is fun to ponder the possibilities....

Now that you mention it.... it is pretty mysterious, isn't it? gui%C3%B1o.gif

Maybe a decent Syndicate character...

Nah. FFG don't like you enough to do that, Scott. They, like Nyarlathotep, are spiteful masters.... gui%C3%B1o.gif

Muhahahaha!

I guess I should not really complain. They created a whole new faction to support the type of Syndicate deck I like to play... demonio.gif

I think Johnny qualifies as being half decent...

Perhaps. Usually the only time Syndicate players will have 5 resources is getting ready for a Panic attack. I don't know that the game typically runs long enough to use him?

Still, it would be a waste to built resources for just one card. It seems to happen often enough that it all comes into some kind of stalemate, so, having an extra panic-like exhaust effect to fill out the curve isn't that bad. Also, there is the Speakeasy to smooth things out.

It's always good to have a backup plan when rushing doesn't work out as planned.

@Marius: this better not be an April Fools joke...

The way I look at it is there is one Domain that needs to go x4 anyway to play High Wizard of the Order so using Southside Speakeasy for an opportune Valone or Panic fits right into the strategy.

With the aide of Syndicate debuffing his ability can tager virtually any Character. Also note that the card targets "X or lower", which is better than the typical "lower than..." limit.

No drain a domain cost as part of the ability = gran_risa.gif

On an aesthetic level, the art is sublime. The shadowy character lurking in the blue green mist creates a mood of deadly threats.

Speaking of Nyarlathothep: Are there any Avatars of Nyarlathothep in the LCG? I got quite a few of those (and corresponding Rituals) in cheap CCG starter packs I found. They would seem like a good choice for an expanded 6-pack cycle. There are also many awesome story cards - complete massacres and other fun stuff. Stories may be more for deluxe expansions, but who knows what they've got in mind for this reprint?

No, it's no joke. That's why it was posted a day earlier, to avoid it being posted on april fools. ;)

It's a seriously powerful criminal, but that happens when it's at the top of the resource curve for the faction.
