First Game in the Bag - Couple Questions/Concerns (House Lynch 1A Spoiler)

By Deek, in Mansions of Madness

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.

We went into Mansions of Madness with the spoken (and oft reiterated) understanding that "This Game Is NOT About Combat". The players knew that going in and were fine; a nice change of pace.

However, MoM then betrayed their Covenant of Pacifism by demanding they kill a named maniac with a buttload of health; a game not designed to focus on combat suddenly forced them to focus on combat. It's hard to begrudge a little peevishness.

That Sir, Is WRONG. Moving monsters usually happens on 3) Keeper Action Step. 4) The monster attack Step comes after step 3, meaning that moved monsters can attack.

I hope this will make the game more easier for the Keeper.

Good Gaming

I think you misunderstood what I meant: yes, the monster attack step comes next after the Action step, but if you wanted to attack an investigator, that means the monster is sat in that given space until the next Keeper turn, as it has no option to move after it has attacked.

oh! that's true, I completely misunderstood you. No as you pointed out, there is NO real mechanics that would allow you to attack with a monster than retreat with it. I would like to see such a mechanic implemented into the game, maybe future expansions and Mythos cards like:

Sudden Retreat. (can be played right before the monster is attacked) The monster glares as you and a cunning grins emerge, before it suddenly retreats into the darkness. Move the monster up to two spaces away from the player. Can be used on any monster that is about to be attacked except zombies. cost:2

I think only mythos cards like that or similar can do anything about your predicament. Now that I fully understand your message, I can write something meaningfull instead of being a jerk. I still love the game with all its faults.

Good gaming and tinkering

Re: Deek and Elbi

sorry If I came on too hard. I just meant that some of you guys read too much into a simple boardgame. Why do you get money in monopoly when crossing the start space? why? why? The simple answers beacuse it says so in the rules. And it's fine if you want to change something beacuse it doesn't fit your way of using the rules. that's why houserules are great, if your investigators don't want to pick up every item they find, let them do so. And maybe monsters don't have to make evade checks because they can't attack and then move. so its a sort of balance thing. in all the investigators have more options and can even move further than most monsters.

Still it's a blast of game, have fun and enjoy tinkering with the game.
ps: having great fun of painting my miniatures. And Deek your threads are decent enough, I am not always that decent though.

I agree with Mal. You need to keep in mind that this is a boardgame and not a simulation. Why, in Monopoly, are you forced to only move in one direction, for example? Etc.

As mentioned, the Keeper has to spend precious threat to move monsters. Allowing the investigators to make attacks of opportunity will unbalance the game in favor of the investigators. Remember, despite the theme, this is a boardgame with two sides. There is no "GM". It is adversarial in nature, and the Keeper wants to win ... so the game needs to try to balance things.

Consider that unless a monster goes through a locked door, the monster will never be able to outrun or avoid the investigators. Monsters can move 2 (3 if the Keeper also spends threat for a Take Sample). Investigators can move 2 + run = 3. Granted, they cannot attack on the turn they run, but the following turn they most likely can. This also doesn't take into account the numerous investigators with ranged weapons that can move 2 + shoot.
