What I hope is retained from the original in the new CotDP

By Solan, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

CotDP has is actually my favorite small box expansion, for several reasons. These are the portions of it which I especially hope will be retained in the new version:

1. The Ithaqua, Shub-Niggurath and Cthulhu Other World cards. I thought these were brilliantly menacing cards. New players deserve to have them to enjoy!

2. The Other World encounters with various Masks of the Crawling Chaos. In the original you had Other World encounters which involved in some way each of the basic Arkham Masks (except for the Dark Pharaoh, curiously enough) plus Mr. Skin. They were very imaginative, extremely thematic encounters. I hope they are not only retained, but that the designers add encounters involving the expansion Masks!

3. The extremely heavy theme, which practically dripped from the Arkham encounter and Mythos cards in the original.

4. The Clothing Drive! One of my favorite Mythos cards in the entire game!

5. The Messenger Ally. I really enjoy the thought of allying with Nyarlathotep.

Same. I'm also hoping for more OW battle cards. But...that may be more appropriate for MH, really. Like, as people mentioned, Hastur in Lost Carcosa, Nyarlathotep in the Dreamlands (perhaps even Another Dimension?), Atlatch Natcha maybe in the Dreamlands, too. Or perhaps a really mean one where, if you're in Another Dimension, you have to face Azathoth...

There is a Dunwitch one where you face Azathoth in an other world. He devours you.

True. I think you need a Luck check, but only if he's the Ancient One? But yeah, similar principle ^_^ Just that this one needs no check, but you have to be in Another Dimension for him to nom nom you. Or for your head to explode. However you wish to picture it!

I took the AO encounters out. Way too much hassle. Disrupted the game no end as you had to search for the Ancient One then battle through several turns of combat.

Clothing Drive may return but hopefully it'll be simplified. Something like make an Evade (+1) check when entering a street. If you fail, end your movmementmake a Combat (+1) [2] checktake one Stamina damage. No need to faff around trying to finding Zombies from the cup any more. I'd expect similar treatment for the cards which put GhostsManiacs into play.

We can't read the new Masks, but it looks like these have been simplified too. The fact that this is essentially a remake (with lots of new / improved material), rather than an update with about three new cards vastly increases my chances of purchasing it, though I'll still wait to hear a few reports before fully committing.

For those like me that own the originally CotDP, what are your plans for old cards? As I play "all-in" I'm going to tryinclude as much as possible, only remove material which is a direct replacement (e.g. remove an old Mask for a new Mask) Sure, this probably means that the Museum Exhibit is a little more prominent than the King in Yellow, but so be it.

Finally, I really hope they include lots of Velma's Diner encounters that make the most of the Velma's Gratitude condition.

I thought this might be a good reference for further discussions on this topic. It's the contents of the original CotDP from the AH Wiki...

When I retired my Dark Pharaoh, I took the few cards I liked about it (most of the Spells, all of the Allies and the Encounter cards that specifically named them, five Exhibits for use with Sara Danforth, the three Ancient One OW Encounters, and the three double-doom Mythos) and "adopted" them into Dunwich. I will check each of these cards against their new counterparts to see what's changed, and unless something outrageously drastic has occurred (and probably even if something has), I will then take all the old cards out, bundle up the old DP box as a complete product, and put it back into its nest in the closet, where it will continue to fulfill its role as the vault in which to put AH cards that sicken me (like Joining the Winning Team, Summon Ancient One, and Massa di Requiem per Shuggay).

zI plan on adapting everything that isn't a direct duplicate from my old CotDP with the new one. Meaning, I'm incorporating all the oldnew exjibit items, assuming that all of them aren't direct duplicates (chances are, the non-mask items will be the same/similar enough). I won't include direct copies, like i'm sure the spells/allies will be. I might include the duplicate Final Battle OW cards, so they have a bigger chance of showing up (since I don't alter my Gate deck,I have a lot of expansions)

I believe you are mistaken, my friend, when you write that you're sure the non-mask items wil be similiar enoughyou believe that the spells/allies will be direct copies. The Spaniard wrote that 69 of the 76 Investigator cards will be new. Only SEVEN will be unchanged,I'm assuming those seven will be the seven Allies. The spellsExhibit Items might be the same in name, but will be different in effect, as we've already seen with the Mask of the Black Pharoah.

He might have meant new as in altered, not new as in 100% different.

It may sound strange, but I hope they tone down the effects of the Arkham encounters. There are too many CotDP encounters where you stand to get fourmore clue tokens in a single encounter. Like that one where you look at yourself in the mirroryour clue tokens double. It takes some of the fun out of it when I'm just handed half a dozen clue tokens.

Try getting that encounter with Patrice. Everyone just immediately jumped into the nearest gate.

It would be interesting to know whether _or_ not there are entirely new cards _or_ renames of existing cards. I would very much appreciate a new card called Mask of the Triune Fates, if only as a wink to the fans. I suspect we'll be able to keep most of the Arkham encounters, so that's potentially 45 useful cards.

Given that we can see Mask of the Black Pharaoh with different rules for it in the preview, I think I can safely say that new cards means both completely newrules changes to cards with the same name. I very much doubt any cards will just be renamed, but it looks like a lot of cards could retain the same namehave different effects. Also, most of the encounter cards WILL have to be changed, to eliminate the "Barred from the neighborhood" encounters.

The only think i'm expecting, it's having boxes a little bit wider. So, i'll be able to put all the Ancient Onesthe Investigators inside.

Would be great.

I got it with Patrice. She had 24 clues before that encounter. Game over.
