Reading only the appropriate Other World text

By Galaahd, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

In my group we just decided to use this house rule: when in Other Worlds, we only read the appropriate text, and we leave the "Other" text only for "Other dimension". This way we have more atmospheric encounters as they are less generic.

Any thoughts on this? What do you think?

It would definitely make the Other Worlds more atmospheric, which would be cool. I'd probably use the Other text for the Dreamlands as well as Another Dimension, though, as the Dreamlands has a relatively "random" feel to it already.

One thing to keep in mind is that this will tend to make the more-dangerous Other Worlds (e.g. R'lyeh) even more dangerous, the less-dangerous ones (e.g. Great Hall of Celeano) still less dangerous. Most of the harmless red encounters are under "Other"; likewise, most of the dangerous blue encounters are under "Other."

Can't say about the expansions, but there are no "Another Dimension" exclusive events in the original, which would mean you'd probably have to get lost in timespace. Would certainly make the game a bit more difficult.

For "Another Dimension" we use "Other" encounters.

XD

Yeah, I read too fast

Sounds interesting

I've been doing this for a couple of years now. Most people seem to like itwe have opinions about the danger levels of some of the other worlds. We all fear R'lyehThe Abyss and Unknown Kadash and look forward to spending time in Another TimeCeleano.

Sounds both funneat. The only problems being the expansion OW's will take you a while to find if you have a lot of Expansionsdon't sort them out.

I think this is absolutely ESSENTIAL when using the Innsmouth Other World cards, which basically offer a choice between two encounters. Making that a BLIND choice is probably the closest AH ever gets to real role-playing.

I'm assuming you draw multiple cards if the first one doesn't have the dimension you're in. It's an interesting idea to be sure. I might try it out someday.

I like to do something similar to this. What I usually do is impose a draw limit before the game starts. I draw up to that specific number of other world cards until I get one with the world the investigator is in on it. If one isn't drawn before the limit is reached, then you take the Other encounter on it. Kind of a medium between the way the rules are and_cutting out the Other text except for in Another Dimension.
