Too Proud To Bow - Wtf?

By Mathias Fricot, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

SPOILER ALERT (for the first book)

Now, I don't have my book in front of me (or with me at University), so I am going to need some help here. Can someone flip to that page where we all folded the corner marking the Tower of Joy? Here is the passage from awoiaf:

javascript:void(0);/*1300976985837*/

Now, here is the quote on the card "Too Proud to Bow" (courtesy of dabbler)

javascript:void(0);/*1300976948812*/

Did anybody else notice this? Is the card quoted improperly? Or is the website? I would really like to know, since its my absolute favourite scene from the series. If its wrong on the card, it would be nice if that got fixed in later printings of Sacred Bonds. This is my first time putting in links, so I hope that worked.

On a similar note, why is Dawn ( javascript:void(0);/*1300977620071*/ ) House Dayne only? Unlike the other blades (Ice, Blackfyre, the Tarly beast, etc.) isn't it available to the 'truest knight' in Westeros? It might be foolishly Nedly, but I would really like to see it restricted to Knights, not House Dayne. You know, people like Beric... or Jaime.

No.

Dawn is not kept in trust for the "truest knight in Westeros" by the Faith or some other Conclave. It is the ancestral sword of House Dayne - like Ice is for House Stark, etc.

It is the tradition of the Dayne's, though, that rather than the blade being held by the current lord of the House, it is held by a knight who has proved himself worthy.

But isn't it noted that unlike the other ancestral swords it is not limited to their house? Its for the knight most worthy to wield it - why would that exclude a non-Dayne knight?

Correct. That is a description of the Dayne's tradition within the House, not a continent-wide search for worthy knights.

Of course, the card doesn't necessarily "need" to be "House Dayne character only," any more than Ice needs to be "Stark character only," but it isn't "anti-Ned" on the face of it to make it so. Wielding Dawn is not something non-Dayne knights in Westeros ever look at as a serious possibility.

Sooo.... Too Proud to Bow accidently included the word "so?" Well, assuming that the Wiki of IceFire quoting is correct. I dunno. Seems like an awfully small thing to worry about.

Lol, thanks Kennon. I know its not that big a deal, it just grabbed my attention to detail. And its a pretty epic quote.

ktom, why would Ice being Stark-only ever be considered 'anti-Nedly'? When Payne took it from him Eddard to behead him it was a great offense, we know this from the perspective of Sansa. This really enforces the appropriateness of the sword being Stark-onlyhouse specific. This isn't the same thing as Dawn. Yes, the only instance I remember of the Sword of the Morning personified is ArthurUlrick, both of house Dayne; but its emphasized (from my interpretation) that the title (and accompanying sword) is not exclusive to their house ,even from Dorne. Otherwise wouldn't it be the "Dayne knight most worthy to wield it" instead of "the knight most worthy to wield it"? I'm not trying to split hairs, I would just like to see that reflected in the card.

No you are splitting hairs, but unintentionally. The quote implies that the Title Sword of the Morning, the sword Dawn go to the House Dayne knight who is most worthy to wield it. GRRM was asked about this at a Q&Ahe confirmed it, the titlesword stay in-house. Generations may go by with the title being vacant, but it is only ever granted to someone within the House, by bloodmarriage.

Thanks, its nice to know GRRM cleared it up. If you would be kind enough to go fix the entry on awoiaf for those of us who don't get down to the Q&A, I'd be greatfilled. At present it says Dawn isn't exclusive to that house.

Much obliged.

Haha, it is indeed a pretty epic quote! I don't, however, have the books in front of me. Are we certain that the Wiki quote is the proper oneit's not missing the word "so?" Because it does make more sense with "so" in the sentence as on the card because that makes it clear that he's making a comparison to the others mentioned previously.

No, the quote on the card is incorrect; the word "so" does not appear in the original quote. Considering that it is very likely I was the person who searched out the quote, I tried to cleanse my honorchecked the novel, only to find out that it was quoted wrong. My apologies.

I didn't help make the card, I just help find flavor text. For about the last four years. Sometimes I might get a little input into a card, but I'm not in designplaytesting. If it's been flavor text for the last three CP sets, it was likely me.

gran_risa.gif There needs to be flavor text on more cards IMO. The cards with it always seem more vibrant. Guess they do a better job of reminding me of the books.
