most over the top moment

By Hardrainfalling, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

just wondering whats the most over the top thing your groups have done, what sort of insane herorics have you awarded extra renown for ?

last game the team was riding in a stormraven which came under attack by Tau stealth fighter drones , the turret gunner was killed and the dev marine took up the guns , the space wolf assualt marine player was champing at the bit so while several miles up opened the door and jumped out (the apoc then failed his str roll on a 97 and nearly got sucked out using a fate point to save himself. the space wolf then decided he wanted to jump onto a stealth drone on its next attack run and give it some chainsword action , due to speed etc I said he had to roll under 10% to jump on , he rolled 01 jumped it and sent it spirling to its doom engines destroyed. not surprisingly i awarded extra renown for this act of insanity :)

I had a tactical marine with only a combat knife charge through a solid wall to save the devastator who had just got charged by a stealer. I was like -60 strength check to break through the wall as part of the charge, the guy had strength 67 (with armour) and unnat strength, came out as 17%, he rolled 03, and righteous fury'd the stealer to death to boot (although this was pre errata RF) we were playing a short campaign and I was accelerating player growth so I actually awarded the Crux Terminatus for this

I had a kill team jump up on rapelling ropes that were being used by kroot to rappel into a hanger from an Orca. The team then proceded to climb the ropes, board the orca and kill the crew before crashing it into the now kroot filled hanger.

Best way of dealing kroot, or the best way, you decide.

My kill team rammed a chimera with a dozer blade into a carnifex, stabbed a pair of meltabombs that had been modified with spikes into its head, fired a heavy sniper rifle through the bottom of its head, and then pounded it with autocannon fire to the chin at point blank range.

It was supposed to chase the team in a jurrassic park style chase scene, instead it survived 1 round. Fun stuff

I'd say the only way. aplauso.gif

This was over the top in a negative way for the players.

They had just jury rigged an ork truck to get them to their objective (their pod was WAY off course) and were attempting to jury rig a melta bomb as a triggered IED for some pursuing ork trucks. Of course the Techmarine fails to mention that he lacks the demolition skill and fails his demolitions roll several times, burning through his fate points. He failed by something like 6 degrees, setting off the explosive, ripping apart their truck, and nearly killing all the players. And then of course they still had to fight the orks....

The Assault marine of my kill team used his jump pack to enter into a machine gun emplacement at the third floor of a building trough a window. He missed the window. entered trough the wall (losing the weapons in the process) and killed 8 Heretics bare handed. then used the machine gun to shoot at other heretics.

I put my group against a Tau emissary with plasma grenades tied to his chest, and Kroot had snuck up behind them and put a gun to each of their heads. The Devistator Ran forward, took two shots to the head, taking 2 points of critical damage there, before grabbing at the emissary, ripping his arm off,and then bracing against the grenades so the rest could escape. Just so they didn't have to make a deal with Xenos.

Even my jaw dropped.

This same Devistator also got the final shot on a Hive Tyrant, jumped off a Chimera to rip off one of it's claws so it could be drug back to the LZ to be a trophy. I made him do alot of tests for it,but he got it.

Who knows what insanity will continue as we run around a tau held world :)

Last night my group finally got together and played its first REAL mission (now that everyone has a set schedule).

I assumed command of the kill-team, which consisted of a Dark Angels Librarian, a Black

While invading a tyranid hive ship, my players ecountered a spike projector weapons battery, which i figured they would destroy and continue on with their mission. I was sadly mistaken, as the players somehow interpreted a closed door as some sort of impenetrable barrier (they had plenty of demo, plasma guns, power weapons, etc.) and decided that the only logical course of action was to turn the gun 180 degrees and shoot through the door and into the body of the ship.

Being a benevolent DM, i figured i'd let them try it, but threw waves of hormagaunts and eventually tyranid warriors at them as they struggled to turn the gun around (30 DoS worth of strength tests, took them about 5 or 6 rounds since 1 guy was pushing it on his own for a while)

Eventually, they got the gun turned around, and the psyker, through a process of delicate psychic convincing, and a punch in a (very luckly guessed) sensitive spot, they fired it through the doorway and into the hive ship, which basically carved a nice path for them to follow.

Also, nova grenades are really not nice to hordes in tight confines....

Last week, my group finished up "A Stony Sleep." Highlights, ranging from badass to silly include:

  • The Devastator would not shut up during the mission briefing. The Inquisitor psychically compels him to shut up. Cue Perils of the Warp. She got the one where you temporarily disappear.
  • One cultist left with critical damage, it's the dual-wielding Assault Marine with Lightning Attack's turn. He declares that he's doing all four attacks. First one is enough to kill him, I tell the player to keep rolling the attacks. The other 3 land as well. The critical damage result becomes "The cultist explodes into more limbs and body parts than he actually has. You hear a voice say 'Brutality!'"
  • Large horde of cultists charging through the forest? Burn it down with Avenger! The enemies failed their agility checks horribly, all PCs passed.
  • Entering the submarine, the techmarine spots two Dark Mechanicus. He grapples one in each arm (rule of cool combined with good rolling). He gets hit from behind by a chainsword-wielding Alpha Legionare. His insane armor and toughness soaks the damage. He grapples the Alpha Legionare with his servo-arm. Two more Dark Mechanicus show up. "Can I use the Chaos Space Marine as an improvised weapon?" Hilarity ensues.
  • During the final battle, they worked out a viable plan to breach the power core's 95 protection rating force field. The techmarine from before fired a lascannon at the Tomb Spyder while the others were working on the plan. He misses, but it's close enough that I rule that it hits the power core behind it. I roll a 97.

I ran Into Oblivion after the core book came out. The players were close to rank 2 and already Respected, some how (Oath of Glory every mission...) so one of Tactical Marines has two storm bolters. When they got to the Tyranid Prime, they hadn't woken it up so he walks over to it barrel taps it with both storm bolters and (its was like +50 to hit even with the -20s) and shot it 16 times in the head. He rolled almost 500 damage. It originally had 100 wounds. The Team leader was a Tyannic War Veteran (who was modeled after Captain Ahab) leads the retreat from the chamber as the pods start spewing 'nids out.

Another time, I had a Black Templar wade into a Magnitude 60 horde with a chain bayonet alone. He ended up finishing it off with a frag that he threw at his feet. He was one of the teem leaders too, he took 8 wounds from the grenade though as he failed the dodge and rolled a righteous fury.

Rainer's thing was pretty sorpresa.gif wasn't it? I hope to top that somehow.

Dare I mention that my Blood Angel Librarian was the first to suggest to make the Black Templar our team leader? gran_risa.gif Of course he has sacked me in the meantime from being second-in-command, which is... meaningless. gran_risa.gif

Just finished the campaign finale on Saturday. Time for another highlight reel.

  • The Librarian who summoned the Daemon Prince, upon blatant disregard for his brothers' safety by refusing to be more careful with powers was supposedly executed for heresy.
  • The group, now under close watch was sent an NPC Chaplain to keep an eye on them.
  • One player was chosen to be an Alpha Legion infiltrator.
  • Successful Sleight of Hand test to set him up the bomb, Chaplain's Drop Pod explodes on descent. (WTF BOOM sound clip use #1)
  • Fight with a Chaos Sorceror, revealed to be the "executed" Librarian.
  • As the fight starts, the Infiltrator realizes a player is severely wounded and strikes.
  • Fellow Dark Angel assumes he is a Fallen, epic duel ensues, devastator jams a Krak grenade in his jump pack, armor destroyed. (WTF BOOM sound clip use #2)
  • Infiltrator is finally killed, dead man's switch rigged to explosives on their ship triggers. (WTF BOOM #3)
  • Near-dead sorceror Pushes a Smite to try to kill them, nullified by Psychic Hood. Roll Phenomena: Perils. Roll Perils: Daemon Prince.
  • The same Daemon Prince from before appears, backhands the Sorceror, sending his corpse flying Librarian blasts him like a clay pigeon with Smite.
  • Replacement Assault Marine falls from orbit, power fist-first. The guards they weren't focusing on are all killed in the shockwave.
  • Unrelated to the others: But I also allowed the Techmarine to speak to the captured Titan's Machine Spirit and repair the Titan's plasma generators, causing the titan to go on a roaring rampage of revenge, plasma drives blew out beyond the Techmarine's ability to repair, just at the entrance to the Irradial Forge itself (Couldn't make the end too easy). Emergency power used to contact someone for extraction.

The group split up while investigating a space station that was completely infested with genestealers and genestealer cultists. The rest was the devastator was left guarding the shuttle as their way out, which put him their alone when a mag 80 horde of Genestealers came running for him. He cut down the first few lines with his heavy bolter, than drew his sacris claymore (he's a Storm warden) and charged the horde.

three minutes later, after some...interesting...dice rolls, the devastator waded out of the fray covered in genestealer gore with just a few knicks in his armor to show for the horde's strength. He was then berated (after mission) by the acting squad leader for endangering his geneseed and the shuttle with his reckless bravado, but still...it was a hell of a fight.

I do not mean to reanimate an older thread, but thought I'd throw my helm into the ring. This may not be as epic as some of the other moments here, but I think its share-worthy.

My character is Brother Pyrus, Techmarine of the Salamanders chapter. We were running a mission to blunt an Ork invasion force by destroying a series of bridges they would have to traverse, and funnel them into a selected kill zone. After some fairly bad luck with our transport (7 degrees of success on my Perception test? Yeah, still didn't see that pesky Ork mine...) we ended up hoofing it across several kilometers of rough terrain. One of our targets of opportunity was a munitions depot that the Orks had taken, and after that went up in a very pretty fireball, we start on to our next objective. We make it to the remains of a mining town when we pick up an incoming Ork Trukk.

Everyone scrambles to conceal themselves amongst the ruined buildings, and set up fire positions. My concealment test was (before modifiers) a 98. We determined that this was because, as a Space Marine... A Salamander... and above all a member of Kill Team Halcyon, Pyrus would not hide from the filthy Xenos, no matter what the player in charge of him said. This means that I'm standing in the middle of the road, heavy flamer at the ready, as the Ork Trukk barrels down on me. The driver decides to run me over, and I am presented with the classic TT scenario... avoid, or go for Death or Glory? We did not have any sort of Deathwatch vehicle rules at this point, so our GM sort of expected me to sidestep. Instead, I called upon the Feat of Strength (upping str to x3) and smashed my servo arm into the oncoming trukk. We used the TT rules (not having any alternates) for such an attack, and amazingly, I managed to completely disable the vehicle. The rest of the squad then proceeds to cut the dismounting Orks to ribbons, including the Nob in MegaArmor.

It was a moment that I think was forced upon me by the Dice Gods, but in the end they did not fail me.

I took the hood ornament as a trophy, and sometimes get referred to as Pyrus Trukk-Puncher.

oh if we try to awaken the dead thread i will turn my helping hand into this necromantic ritual.

i write from GM perspective.

In past KT rescued rather big settlement of puritan imperial citizens (imagine amish with imperial creed, army drill and lasguns), great battle vs tyranid happens before city walls, with city militia (all who is able to wield lasgun, from 10 year olds to 90 year olds) firing from walls and KT protecting main gate. My original plan was to show them price of failure, but they fighted with such ferocity and dumb luck that i allowed them to taste marginal victory. Last Synaptic creature was Hive tyrant with his guard and lots of fexes and nid wariors plus endless hordes of trash. In last heroic charge Blood Angel veteran have made suicidal jump pack charge at hive tyrant that overlooked battle. He Succeded. Before Tyrant guard moved to rip him to tiny bits, lost hive mind connection ended in total chaos in tyranid army. He survived (at cost of FP). Mission done, KT left, for them yet another battle in name of DW and Emperor. For people in city great omen of Emperor love and care. Around 6 years later same KT was operating in city area again, hunting great band of orc pirates and raiders. They decided to check some rumors about heresy, and were too late by mere 6h. Whole City was wiped around 4h before they arived. In burning ruins of settlement they have found thousands of dead citizens, pilgrims and refuges, and dozens of orks in search of pillage. They wiped out ork riders, and started to search for any survivors. They have found only dead bodies, and nerby imperial cult temple with 6 great statues inside. Statues were picturing them from many years before. Blood Angel that have slain Tyrant years ago found body of little girl with child book and plush toy. Book was about them being sent by Emperor to save little town, and toy was picturing him (space marine plush toy). He have taken book and attached toy resembling him to his backpack. Then he gives book to KT leader and he goes AWOL to hunt every ork from that riding party. All of Kt join him. In next few sessions they slaughtered every ork from that band and assaulted their krozeer to get their boss. Blood Angel ordered toy to be covered with glass-adamantine hard alloy and permanently attached it to his armour as mark of shame and so it may remind him cost of failure.

I really liked RP from Blood Angel so i awarded him with hatred (orks) and FP.

In the Oblivions Edge adventure my jetpack-less assault marine Charcaradon is "walking" across the outside of the hive ship with the rest of the KT. The genestealers attack and cause the librarian and the 1 armed tac marine to slip from the edge of the ship. I have my character grab the 2 genestealers and push off from the ship and send all 3 of us floating off into space. The Black Templar assault chaplain passes his pilot and agility test to catch my character and throw him towards our 2 adrift comrades who I grab and all 3 of us are thrown onto the ship. Myself and the 1 armed marine kindly referred to as "Lefty Lorgath" manages to catch. Somehow he does better that the librarian who fails his test as well as his fate re roll. I agility test to catch and save him AGAIN.

Back inside the ship we come across a carnifex. Our librarian decides to push Smite as two basic actions, which our DM allows graciously. He does 70 damage to the carnifex effectively removing half its damage. He phenoms 4 TIMES. Twice automatically from pushing and he rolled doubles on both his rolls. He emanates and explosion of energy which drains him of all psychic energy. the carnifex directs all its attacks at him and lops of the librarians leg. Our chaplain is then flying in front of the things head just as it tries to launch a bio plasma attach at the rest of the group (who are stupidly clumped together). He is given the option to try to dodge and take partial damage but allow it to hit his allies behind him, or to take it full-on. Being a badass, he takes it, saving the rest of the team. It throws him back 10 meters and he miraculously survives but is also unconscious. The tech marine tips over a spire onto its back which I run across to get onto its back. After a turn of hacking at its back i finally breach its back chitin and make a small crack in it. Our devastator marine throws a krak grenade at its feet but fails horribly. I pass an agility check to catch the grenade before it flies past me. I then proceed to place the live grenade in the small crack in the carnifex's back and lay on it to direct the blast. Somehow it is still alive so I wrap my arms around its neck and try to break its neck. I roll a strength check, my str is 71! I get a 7. I rip its head clean off. Being a space shark, I take its teeth and string them onto a necklace and drape them as a trophy on my shoulderpad.

I gave my KT a modified, tougher Extraction as a later mission, and they had a fairly easy time of it, so like the book suggests I dropped a Hive Tyrant on them at the end instead of a Thunderhawk. I gave it wings, like the book said, and decided to give it bone sword, lash whip and heavy venom cannon. Big mistake. The big sucker went to town on the KT, ripping in half the Tactical marine (cut off one of his legs one round - then the next round he missed, and I stupidly decided to scatter the blow as Hive Tyrants are so big and everyone was standing so close), strangling to unconciousness the assault marine, and poisoning the Techmarine. This just left the Apothecary and the Librarian, along with Magos Vyakai, still standing. The Apothecary was scary strong - strength of 51 with Thy Strength be lengend, so he and the Librarian came up with a plan. The Apothecary ripped off the Techmarine's servo arm, then let the Librarian heat it up with Avenger. The Apothecary meanwhile seized the Assault Marine jetpack, and grabbed hold of the white hot servo arm and wrapped it round the flying Hive Tyrant's neck and held it in place, both strangling and burning it that it didn't notice the Salamander librarian overloading his melta gun and chucking it at the thing.

Let's just say it got a real bad tan, and leave it at that.

My kill-team was fighting a broodlord. The only melee fighter (Black Templar) lost his eye, left arm and all of his weapons during this fight. After some thought he pulled a melta bomb and made a sucessfull feint with it plunging it into broodlords belly (melta bomb feint was a little too much for the hivemind). To his suprise broodlord survived and took his right arm. He then used his jump pack and smashed into broodlord pushing it from the rooftop they were fighting on. It was only about 10 m high (but the tyranid was almost dead at the moment) so our marine fired up his jump pack so that they would both smash into ground with higher speed. Marine had to burn a fate point but he killed the broodlord with style (and was an object of Monty Python's Black Knight jokes for 20 min).

I had a marine being chewed on by multiple rippers out of a swarm engaging tyranids on a catwalk. He pulled a krak grenade and tossed it at one of the support struts. With a -30 ballistic skill roll he rolled an 01, took out the strut and sent the rest of the horde down into a deep chasm. Then the other marines literally stomped on the remaining rippers.

1 wound left from gun drone fire from a Hammerhead. Taking a knee, praying to the Emperor to guild my bolter fire, fire select Kraken rounds, I half action aim and fire. The shot blasts through the chasis into the rail gun reactor. Hammerhead falls to pieces around me as by the Emperor's grace I walk from the wreckage. I RF'd 7 times on my damage roll for over 110.

2 missions later, I jump on the Hive Tyrant flying away from the Devastator who delivers a full 7 shots of Heavy Bolter fire. I combat knife and chainsword'd my way up the beast to have it plummet into promethium tanks and launching my self away from it as it fell. Critical damage ensues like mad. All after cat and mousing a Lictor for half the mission and then 1 shotting it in the face with a 01. Marksman's honor awarded. This Tactical Marine is retiring or going off the deep end real fast, thank you "A Hero's Spirit'. We fought well.
