Just wanted to say thank you and hello...

By Cyber-Dave, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Well, after doing a bunch of research on the game, asking a few questions on the boards, and reading through a copy of the core rules, I have decided that this game is indeed for me. So, today I went out and bought the entire collection. Busy reading through the rest of it now. Thank you for helping me choose a second Fantasy RPG for me to collect and play!

What is your first?

Just curious...

D&D :))))

lol

Well, I have been playing RPGs for a long time. I own most of 2e D&D's products, but I don't play that edition anymore. All my books are packed up and in storage. In terms of urban horror I own a few white wolf products, but I will be honest, it isn't really my cup of tea. I also own every single Star Wars Saga product published, but I don't really use it for Star Wars (I like its rules a lot, so I modified them slightly and used them to create my own sci-fi campaign). But for heroic fantasy, I am a big fan of D&D 4e. So, D&D 4e is the "first" (though, not really) fantasy RPG. Warhammer looks like it will b a nice counterpoint. It is pretty much the anti-thesis to 4e D&D, and looks like it will be a lot of fun for when I am in the mood for a more dark, gritty, and less heroic, fantasy campaign. I also like the differences in terms of combat encounter resolution. I enjoy 4e's miniature skirmish style combat encounter resolution mechanics, but I am not always in the mood for that. Sometimes I want a more narrative combat encounter resolution mechanic. It looks like this game will deliver.

You will not regret it. I'm up to my fourth session and the game keeps getting better and better and even those that were not convinced by the system in the beginning are now loving it!

This is the best choice you could make! The game seemed strange to me at first because it is so vastly different from the main RPG's on the market and those that I played previously, however once I read the rules thoroughly and created a sample character I began to realize the potiential offered by the system.

I've always been a fan of the setting of Warhammer and have enjoyed the tabletop battles game so that helped with my view of WHFRP. Its been a blast to explore all the options available within the system itself. I love the free form nature it affords, how it stresses story and RP as opposed to tactics and combat, it makes my games have better flow.

I am soooo jealous that you went out and bought the collection. I wish that I had the finances currently to gather the whole collection together, it has been a piece meal process for me!

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the WHFRP 3e experience, nice to have you onboard.

P.S if you are interested you should check out the Reckless Dice Podcast @ http://recklessdice.rorschach.net/ (its a podcast dedicated to WHFRP and the 3rd edition in particular)

Thank you, I will check out that podcast.

Yea, I have already bought everything except for the quests (I only bought the Witch's Song), the Adventurer's Tool Kit (none of the stores in my area seem to have it in stock, and Amazon.ca doesn't either), and the guide's/vaults (doesn't seem to be much of a point if I already own the core box). Though, I do have a question... if I buy the Player's Guide and the Player's Vault, will I be missing any of the information/bits from the Adventurer's Tool Kit? I don't want to have to wait forever to get my hands on the contents of that product. Anyways, I have already played my first game. I am LOVING the system so far. This is a GREAT system. It definitely plays a very nice counter balance to the kind of games I would want to play when playing a D&D 4e game.

I also want to say hello to all, last week it arrived my copy here in bolivia, and although i am slowly starting to read the books and rules, i love it. Thanks to all

Well the Players guide would be nice for character creation and quick reference at the table, and the players vault would be useful in that it has extra bits so multiple people can have their own copy of the cards that only come in one's (honey'd words, riposte, etc. etc.), however the contents of the Adventures Toolkit do not come with the Players Vault. I think that the Creatures Vault is essential, the Guide not so much unless you are curious about the monsters in more detail. Basically the only reason for you to get the GM vault would be to gather more bits and chits, but if you game with a small and varied enough group this should not be essential.

A lot of us started with DnD - in fact, probably many of your WFRP designers - so I'd take a moment before dismissing it offhandedly. I have played dozens of systems over the years - some of which have been better and worse than Dungeons and Dragons, but few of them have ever been able to provide the talent, creativity and willingness to try which produce a great GM ... those things came from me, no matter the system I was using. I have played in many groups and never seen a story suffer because it was told with the DnD system, as opposed to another. RPG elitists love to bash Dungeons and Dragons, but almost every great GM I know started with that game ... and some still play it.

Yeah. Actually it's a stable system. I don't started with it, I started with "Das schwarze Auge", in the late 80ies. But as we grew up we noticed that this system is dopey. We also played, with me as a GM D&D 3. But We laso disliked the rules after a while. Then I found and GMed "The Riddle of Steel". I still play it when only one of my players has time to take part. But parallel I took part as a player with Warhammer 2nd at first I disliked the Rules System (rembered me a little of "Das schwarze Auge"). But the Warhammer Fantasy Universe is magnificent. With a little houseruling the system was also pretty good and I liked from the start of the career system.

Now we switched to WH3 I play as a player (currently a Gambler) and GM it. Only thing that bothers me is that the rules are coming part after part and I have to cancel all my houserule e.g. for Dark Magic (ok, FFG made it better ;)) and I think I will have to change my house rules for runemagic and horse combat, too. But I think I can keep my body zone rules, I don't think FFG will deliver it with Omens of War. But that's ok. So Warhammer Fantasy and WH40K are now our/my favourite systems.

Houserules over houserules, sounds exhausting. I do not like "DSA" or §Black eye" because of its comples simulation core, why now make the good system of Warhammer fantasy 3rd mor complex and steal the fun out of it? What brings you this "trefferzonen" system?

That's what I wrote. We stooped with DSA because it's dopey. I only Knew DSA 2nd and this was not complex.

We like the body zone system from WH 2nd and I made rules for the 3rd, so this is more complex as you said. And it works fine. When I got Omens of War in my hands I will make one, or more of those Enhance Action Cards regarding body zones.gran_risa.gif

IMO the rest of WHF3 doesn't have to be changed!

BTW, I think the sell DSA in US and Britain under the title "Dark Eye".

Indeed you are right, Dark Eye it is. I have the englisch pdf here:) The bodyzone system from WH 1st and 2nd was a bit confusing for some players in my group so i exchanged it with an extra dice with pictograms on it. But for fluid gameplay and more fun i find the wound card system out of 3rd the best. One less thing to worry about in play.
