There was some criticism from another poster about the slow speed of Dany entering the tub.

Yes, because that scene was totally unnecessary. What's the point to show the ass for syuch a long time? (I like asses for the record) I prefer if they not shortened the other more important scene instead.

Yeah, that was me (& I too liked it for the record), but it did strike me as gratuitous the first time I watched (but, then honestly the haircut scene with Robb,Jon & Theon was clearly thrown in for the ladies & not necessary at all either - couldn't help but think they patterned it after the locker room scene in Top Gun with Ice & Maverick).

Im glad I wasnt the only one who thought this! =P I thought it would have been much more important to have the whole Dany/Drogo character development.
That said I watched the show with 3 new commers to the story last night and they all agreed it was a great episode and are eager for more so like, clearlly the show is doing something right? xD

I could do without the metalwork to put wolves on shields or creating a Dothraki language.

As someone who has a lot of contact with the guy that made the language I can say that it probably didn't cost them very much. Everything is done by one guy and it's not even a fulltime job for him so on a multimillion $ budget you wouldn't even notice it and I think it will add a very nice feel to the show.

A lot of people (not just here) seem to be commenting on how dull/slow the first episode was, and how it was a bit confusing. Is that really so different than the first episode of the Sopranos, Deadwood or the Wire? Really, not a hell of lot happened in those shows either. I think sometimes people get impatient, forget that at this point, there is really a lot of stuff the view is NOT supposed to know yet ( & as readers of the books, we can do too much helping/interpreting for new viewers).

Ya, I think that when people compare this with other shows they forget that their impression of other shows is based on whole completed seasons which is very different than looking at just the introduction you see in a premiere episode.

Anyone wondered why Will was not killed by white walker? I hate when filmmakers change facts. (and "white walker" term - was it in the book? I read translation, so I don't know)

Yes, it was used at times in the books but not as their main epithet. More in the sense of [paraphrasing] "They are the others, the white walkers from beyond the wall"

There are four references to white walkers in the first book:

Mormont was deaf to the edge in his voice. "The fisherfolk near Eastwatch have glimpsed white walkers on the shore". This time Tyrion could not hold his tongue. "The fisherfolk of Lannisport often glimpse merlings."

Old Nan: "...and the white walkers move through the woods." "You mean the Others," Bran said querulously.

"You want to go back there, Osha? More fool you. Think the white walkers will care if you have a hostage?" He turned back to Bran and slashed at the strap around his thigh.

Osha: "Why do you think I run south with Stiv and Hali and the rest of them fools? Mance thinks hell fight, the brave sweet stubborn man, like the white walkers were no more than rangers, but what does he know?"

As with any book made into a movie or tv show there are bound to be those who are happy and those who are upset. I waited 30 years for the Lord of the Rings Movies and was upset by the many director's changes but I think they caught the essence of Tolkien's work from a lifelong reader's perspective.

Now this series from HBO comes along and I"m pretty freaking impressed. I've watched all trailers about 5 times and the 1st episode 3 times now. I admit some things were rushed and some edited but the casting is just about perfect (except for Catelyn, sorry just not what I had envisioned for her to look like, and King Robert, he should be a very big muscular guy turned fat not a fat guy.) the sets are spot on and the 1st episode was wow. However,if I had not read the books I might not have gotten as much out of it but it was still awesome.

I can't help but feel the director's did their best to recreate Martin's books in film. They sure didn't take the liberties that Jackson did with the 500 elvish archers at Helm's Deep.

Agreed. The more I rewatch, the less I like Mark Addy as Robert. He's been great in other roles, but he never gives the sense of being a huge, badass warrior past his prime. He's just an average slob. Where's Robert's vaunted charisma? I always pictured Robert a little like Elvis in the later days- sure he was fat, drugged up and in a rhinestone jumpsuit- BUT IT WAS ELVIS!

How many people did I tell it should have been Oliver Platt playing King Robert?

No clue. Doesn't ring a bell to me...

Ah, the guy who designed the Dothraki language got his PhD from my old university. I thought you might also have attended in which case you would have gotten it. I was then going to make a comment about a linguistics professor if you were familiar with him but sadly not. Oh well.

Cheers

Ah, ok. No, I only know David Peterson over the internet since I'm involved in the Learn Dothraki community.

I looked up Oliver Platt and he would have been better than the current King Robert but I think you almost need a massive ex football player/ wrestler type that is a bit long in the tooth now to get the bad ass warrior turned fat drunk. I tried to google some but just couldn't find in the real world what I had imagined.

At the end of episode 1 they have the Hound talking to Tyrion, which makes me very curious what the "Mountain that Rides" should look like. Now he should be truly massive!!! A Great Khali or El Gigante type but I don't know any legitimate actors who are this size. (Sorry to use wrestlers as examples but these guys fit the mold.)

The guy who plays The Mountain is 214cm so he's tall but not "El Gigante"-tall. He's an australian stuntman/actor who has mainly done asian action movies and he's a former wrestler and bodybuilder.

He has a great post on his blog that goes through how he got the part starting with a fan of the books contacting him in 2007 and letting him know that there might be a role for a tall muscular actor like him. http://www.conanstevens.com/acting-movies-tv-film/tall-actor-blog/ser-gregor-clegane-i-am.html

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and the actor looks perfect for the mountain!

Quite happy with the second episode. It just gets better and better and will continue to get better and better.

In the words of my Dad (who hasnt read the books or even seen the first episode) "Joffrey looks like a real stinker" hah

Frakking BRILLIANT! He woudl ahve been spot on. (Loved him in west Wing0

and last night's episode was mcuh better. So good to see the nerd porn quotient drop. The scene with dany and her hand maid was handled very tastefully. and more importantly -w e gto to see soem character development and exposition: Cat, Tyrion Jon etc.

Hey ingsve - good to see you posting again! How's Sweden?

I am a little scared of the pacing considering it is only the second episode, but it picked up near the end and was a great episode. Since I am watching with two major fans, two who has read one book, and one total newbie, I am usually watching to see how they react. Seems good so far!

I still pinch myself during every episode.

Sidenote: Didn't all the wolves cry out when Lady died? I was kind of looking forward to that...

I actually just re-read Game of Thrones last week and the pacing is so far pretty much exactly 80 pages per episode. I think I marked where I think most episodes will end and they seem to be pacing it accurately for that. I forgot that the first book reads a bit slow as well until about the Tourney of the Hand (which should be the 4th episode).

And ya all the direwolves did cry out when Lady died. I was also hoping to see Old Nan in 2nd episode, really hoping they did not edit her out at this point but now Im a wee bit worried on that one.

I'm in love with Maisie Williams. Sadly, she will be older next year, and next year, and next year... The same with Bran sad.gif
