on skill training and specializations

By Fenderstat, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hey guys, a few questions.

1. In regards to skill training, in the rule book (which I don't have at the moment so I can't be certain) it says you can only train a skill once per character rank and specializations are given out as rewards by the gm. So in theory I would need to be rank 3 before I can 3 different skills by one. Is that correct?

2. What happens when I change careers, lets assume i was a soldier so I can ride but I don't train it. I then be a scholar or something like that who doesn't have ride, do I incur misfortune because its not in my career and I never got it trained when I was a soldier

3. When creating a character do you let them train in as many skills as they can? Or do you only make them train in one as they need to be rank 2 before they can train again?

1) When you complete a career (10 career advancements chosen, and spend one last advancement), you get a free specialization in the skills you trained in your career (so not the ones you chose in character creation). You can only train a skill once per career, and can't attain higher skill rank than your character rank. Thus a wizard (who gets spellcraft for free) or a Initiate learning Piety at character creation, can learn the skill again reaching skill rank 1, while a soldier training weaponskill at creation, can't train it again till he's rank 2.

Note though, that if a soldier trains weapon skill at creation, spends 2 advancements to train resilience (non-career), he'll be able to train weaponskill to rank 2 in his career, because he'll be rank 2 character before finishing his career.

2) A scholar is just as good at riding (assuming stats being same) as a soldier if none of them has trained it. Having a skill on your career sheet, does not mean you can perform the skill, just means you can train it at creation, or in career (or both, see above).

3) Can only train a skill once at creation. For basic skills this also means you won't be able to train it in your career, as that would make it skills rank 2, while being character rank 1. Advanced skills can be trained once at creation, and then again in your career.

thanks.
