Magic and Magic Levels

I had one last question about Magic. How exactly do you gain Magic Levels? Are they equal to the casters level? And they decide what level goes into what? Or does the GM decide? or how does it work?

Magic levels are determined by the character's intelligence and any advantages that raise the max magic level (ie: Natural knowledge of a path). You should read through the entire chapter on Magic up to the spell lists, there is a table that shows the max level of spells a character can learn, and once they choose how may apply to each path, it stays that way until Intelligence and Max Spell Levels goes up. (paths that conflict cannot be learned together without the Advantage from GMs Toolkit).

The number of spells and their max level at the start the game is suggested in that chapter as well - I think its 1/2 the max level of the path for pure caster classes, and 1/4 of the max level for hybrids, but I'd double check that. There is a point system too that can be used to 'buy' the total levels of spells the character would know at start, and the rest would have to be learned or developed as the game progressed.

I've read that but I guess I miss-read some parts but I don't remember it saying to determine right away at what they're at. But some of the other parts do make sense now. Thanks.

I'll post a couple more things you may find in the spanish Arcana Exxet.

GENERAL RULE: A character may spend DP on Magic Level (5DP for 5 Magic Level) with the following limits:

1) DP spent on Magic Level count for the limit of DP a character may spend on Supernatural Abilities.

2) A character may never spend more than 1/10 of his DP on Magic Level (ie. a Level 1 character cannot spend more than 60DP on it).

NEW ADVANTAGE:

Gradual Magic Learning: A character receives +5 Magic Level per Level. 2CP

This couple things make a bit easier life for magicians on my opinion, especially if you consider that Arcana Exxet offers a VERY interesting way of spending Magic Level in the form of Metamagic abilities (abilities that somehow improve you as a mage requiring the expenditure of Magic Level), but that's a really long story and I'm not going to post it here.

I hope players will find these bits useful.

I'm not sure about the name of the advantage, but I think it is something like intuitive magic knowledge. It gives you like 20 levels of magic spells for 2 CP. That sounds like a much bigger advantage.

As I understand the only way to increase your magical knowledge is to increase your intelligence. (even thought the GM probably won't let you spend all you magical knowledge right off the bat. But after Int gets past 10 you get quite a few magic levels per +1 int.

I am rather sure about my post, since I own Arcana Exxet. You can both buy Magic Level with DP (as explained before) and the advantage costing 2CP gives you 5 Magic Level per Level.
