Zealot and his Piety

By Podtxt2, in WFRP Rules Questions

We were making characters, one of my players decided to play Zealot and he asked why he can choose Piety skill when he has no access to Invocation. I searched all books I have and found no answer. It's like he can generate favour but he can't cast bleesings. Please, help me.

Piety (as a skill) is also like spellcraft in the sense that it lets you know about Religion. So a zealot that wants to know about his religion, probably has Piety.

Also, as a point of note, zealots (at least in art, as pictured etc) are Sigmarite. If you look at the Sigmarite spells you find a specific one (Namely I believe it's called Pious Zeal) which doesn't take invocation to cast, but instead only Piety (and requires you to flagelate yourself).

Hope that helps.

Thanks, you helped a lot. This is a religious fanatic of Morr, but this god also has a Piety blessing (Speed/Stay Morr's Hand). Zealot is now far more interesting.

"knowing what is pleasing and appropriate" to Morr could mean (outside spellcasting) knowing how to gain the benefits of relics of Morr, how to avoid offence when entering graveyards, and various other things. While "currying favour" mechanically means accumulating tokens, in roleplaying sense it means just that and could offer benefits in some situations or simply impress other Morrites (e.g., make a piety check while praying to impress the Morrite priest).

There was a discussion about Zealots and piety not too long ago.

Technically, a Zealot cannot acquire any Blessings since he does not have a Faith card. This is the same reason that Priests of one deity cannot acquire blessings of another deity, Wizards cannot acquire spells from other Orders, and non wizards cannot acquire wizard spells.

Purchasing Blessings requires the associated Faith talent, while purchasing spells requires the associated Order talent, unless specifically mentioned in the career's rules (such as for hedge witches).

Essentially, the Piety skill is only useful as a skill related to knowledge of religion, and provides no spellcasting/invocation ability or benefit ... although the Zealot could transition into a Priest career (or vice versa) fairly easily, in which case the additional career rank to train Piety would be useful.

With that all said, it probably isn't necessarily game-breaking to allow a house rule letting a zealot know a single blessing associated with their god, and forcing them to use equilibrium to power favour. I would be leery of letting it get too close to the abilities of the priest line, however.
